Hola a Todo el Mundo: Vintage talent

ver el texto en castellano

Your appearing on stage is peculiar: You make up yourselves, you paint the stage… Everything looking for a complete incursion from your audience, in order to enjoy completely the concert. From which point do you consider important all these previous steps before a live show?
Every album we publish, when we turn it into a live show, we try to carry it with a different weight. We are not making – up ourselves anymore, but we have lights, lasers and when the budget allows it, the wonderful effects from Hector de la Puente.

Do you remember us to some power folk bands like Port O’ Brien. Do you consider you are near folk? Neo folk? Nothing at all?
We have been moving away from folk gradually on the mainstream sense. In our last album, Ultraviolet Catastrophe, it’s difficult to see any evidence from that kind of music. Influences, style and what we want to do now, has changed considerably.

You began as a band in 2006. In 2007 you published your first rough cut and everything started working. Now, with two LP’s published, if you look back, will you change or improve something, from experience?
Essential parts from learning are the mistakes and every decision taken, drives you to a different place. We’ll never know if some decisions where really mistakes at all. To have taken them somehow different could drive us from different roads. Actually, we are happy and excited about the place we are now, so, who knows, it is not an easy answer. Maybe some things that we had to do, in order to maintain alive the band in a financial way, if we set out them, they could make us doubt nowadays.

Ultraviolet Catastrophe, published in 2012 is your second LP. How will you define it?
A step beyond in our way, and to us the opening of the band onto a universe in which we didn’t move before. It has renovated us and it has given us strength to make more songs.

We know that it will not be like this at all but… As a band, you all seem very spiritual guys. What can you do on an average day when you do not have any show or essay? Do you go over there holding the trees? ;) ;)
I think that an unspiritual being, is an incomplete being, with a fault and so, mistaken.
To us, HATEM is an extension of our likes, feelings, interests and illusions, so we can say that what forms HATEM forms us, ourselves. When we finish our levitations and our three-day fast, we use to do what everyone else: eat, love, sleep, destroy the part that corresponds us from the planet, and die little by little.

Do you use instruments that, as well they are famous know, when you began they were unusual. Instruments like ukuleles, banjos, tambourines… which is HATEM’s platter to have such an American tradition being from Madrid?
Actually and after Estela Castiza’s EP, we kept apart this folk Americana tradition. We got involved with another kind of instruments with recent traditions such as synths. Our influences in a really high percentage come from Anglo-Saxon world, and so the elements we use to make music also come from there.

At whom would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers or undepants and why?
To anyone who is working in music in this country. It is a heroic act. In the future, statues will be raised in squares with their figures, streets and big avenues will be named in their honor and pharaonic monuments will be named UNESCO heritage.

As we have read, before live shows you all meet and do something like a “friendship singing”.  Explain us a little bit what’s all this about. Is it like a charm to face the show?
In HATEM we all love us and anything worth to get into this communion. We sing, we shout, we hold each other, we laugh and we go out to shine this love stream to the people that comes to see us and give them a little bit of all that. God blesses them.

Give us three good reasons to not miss a show from Hola a Todo el Mundo.
Because you’ll like it. Because it’s fair and necessary. Because you’ll make us incredible happy and that will add points to your karmic balance.

We finish the interview with the video from the song “They won´t let me grow”, from your last LP, called Ultraviolet Catastrophe. Tell us, what’s the song about?
It is a song that talks about all this obstacles, jams and undesirable beings that don’t allow you to walk where you’d like and where your heart wants to arrive.

Mount Moriah: Portrait of the "New South"

ver el texto en castellano

Mount Moriah are Heather McEntire (lead singer and guitar), Jenks Miller (guitar) and Casey Toll (bass).  They have just published a second LP “Miracle Temple”, their first album released by the extremely well-known label Merge Records (Dinosaur Jr., Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel, Archers of Loaf…).
They are from North Carolina, and are influenced by the Americana sound although they use to be defined with other bands into the “New South” sound or what’s the same:  Keep the pure southern folk essence in an indie-rock line.

Jenks has answered our hysterical interview.

Folk, Indie-Rock, Secular Gospel, Country … But we think that’s better that you tell us: How will you define Mount Moriah’s sound?
We try to keep our sound open so that we can continue to evolve creatively.  The band formed so that Heather and I could explore more traditional (and maybe accessible) musical forms that our other more confrontational projects (Bellafea and Horseback, respectively) don't really allow.  So yes, folk, country and Americana influences are often the most obvious influences on our sound.

On your second LP’s cover, we can see an impressive picture of a farm on fire. If we translate this to you as a band, suggests us that some way, you finish a stage to begin a new one with this album.  Is that what it’s about?
Yes, that's definitely a part of what makes the cover such a powerful image.  Maggie Fost, Merge's art director, found that image in an archive after we discussed the record's themes with her.  The barn in the image was burned down in order to make way for a dam.  That violent transformation helps characterize some of the drama in the record.

What does it mean for you to be published by Merge Records?
We're thrilled to be able to work with Merge!  The label casts a long shadow here in North Carolina, and they only seem to grow over the years.  Heather and I released Mount Moriah's debut record on our own label, Holidays for Quince, and that was a wonderful experience.  When it came time to make the follow-up, Merge allowed us access to resources we otherwise wouldn't have, which helped the band fulfill our own growing ambitions.

As we have read, in your first LP Heathers voice seemed quite shyer than in this album, something that we could consider as an element of the natural evolution of the band. What other elements have changed in relation to your first LP? Has Mount Moriah changed some way?
I think Heather gained a lot of power and confidence as a singer as a result of our touring on the debut.  She's always had a very affecting voice, but as she gained more control over its power, the band was able to follow suit and explore louder, bigger and more confident arrangements.  There's a lot more happening on Miracle Temple, and the production is much bolder.

You come from North Carolina; please excuse our ignorance and few knowledgement in North American history… We think that exist some values and traditions that are considered untouchable, one of them country folk music: A very strong tradition inside American’s folklore. We suppose that some people love your music but there will also exist people that criticize the own style of the band because of its singularity. What do you think about those opposed to the “New South” portrait?
Country and folk music are dynamic forms; they exist at the intersection of a collective history and a shared imagination, and our understanding of those forms changes over time.  So yes, there is a tradition at work here, but traditions look different depending on where you're situated.  As progressive, creative types, the individuals in Mount Moriah are interested in aspects of the South that represent challenge, evolution, and personal liberation.  Those themes have always been present, one just has to know where to look (and often the official record isn't going to point you in the right direction).  Personally, I think it's most helpful to understand the discourse surrounding the "New South" as an increased awareness of something that was always here.

Now we are going to leap to the past (keep calm, we will come back entire to our sits). Heather belonged to a punk band (Bellafea). Can you cross from punk to folk without die trying? As we see things haven’t gone bad but… When and how do you make up your mind of doing making something completely different?
Rules were made to be broken, right?  I say that with tongue firmly in cheek, but the truth is that the world of music is -- at least for all us audiophiles -- virtually boundless.  It's as big as you want it to be.  In an age of hyper-connectivity and an insatiable hunger for illumination, it makes sense for artists to cast wide nets rather than to disappear down the rabbit-hole of some imagined singular and rigid form of music.

This question is mandatory: At whom would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers or underwear and why?
I don't know how to answer this!  Alas, I do not own any Hello Kitty underwear ;)

Will this year be the year when you’ll beat all marks about the number of interstate roads crossed during a Tour? Now seriously, you are touring the mid-East Coast in a short term, isn’t it? When all your van tires are worn-out it could be a good moment to think about taking a flight and tour outside from US, maybe Europe?
We've done two tours thus far, crossing the continental US.  We have another coming up in June with Jesse Sykes.  We'll eventually make it to Europe, but it's an expensive trip so there's a lot that has to fall into place first.

Truly, you have very good live shows. Also the critics consider it and we can appreciate it in the Internet, watching your live videos. How is a Mount Moriah’s rider?
Thanks for saying so!  Our rider is simple:  veggies, hummus, and soda water!

We finish the interview with the song “Bright Light” from the new LP “Miracle Temple”. What does this song mean for you?
You'd probably get a different answer from Heather, but to me "Bright Light" is the most immediate, hooky track on Miracle Temple.  As such, it's a gateway into the darker aspects of the record, the bright, shining lure that beckons the listener in.

Hoy Jenks responde a nuestra entrevista histérica.

Folk, Indie-Rock, Secular Gospel, Country …

Mikaela Davis: Harpindie

ver el texto en castellano

Mikaela Davis, indie harpist and vocalist, has answered to the Histerycal Interview.
The 30th June was released the debut album, Mikaela Davis selftittled, was recorded at Red Booth, a local tiny studio that focuses in indie artists. Is it cool to be an indie hapist? Here she is.

The harp is an instrument unusual to play in an indie band. Can you explain us what an indie harpist is? Is it a difficult instrument to play?
Well, all I do is write songs in an indie style! It’s still on a regular concert grand harp! Harp can be difficult. There are 47 strings and 7 pedals at the bottom. You must be able to play the harp while changing the pedals at the same time! Each pedal changes a certain pitch (ex. A, B, or C) from flat, natural, to sharp.

You‘ve been playing the harp since you were 8 years old. When did you decide to experiment with the harp and indie music?
When I was in middle school I used to write songs on the piano. When I was in high school I decided it would be much cooler to write songs on the harp instead! That’s when I started writing more. I showed some songs to my friend Alex, who ended up being the drummer in my band. After that we added a guitarist too!

Is not the same carrying a guitar than an harp, isn’t it? What are the difficulties you may come across when preparing the concerts?
Breaking a string is always my worst fear! I broke a string at one of my last shows right before we played so I had to take 10 minutes to put a new one on (good thing I always bring extra strings with me). I move my harp around so much though, it’s not too much of a pain to bring around.

We know by facebook, twitter and other social networks that you have a cat named Ringo. Are the Beatles an inspiration for you? Have you other influences?
Yes!! That is excatly why I named my cat Ringo. The Beatles are so amazing to me because of how much their music changed but was still amazing. They never got old! My other biggest influences are Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith.

How would you describe your music to people who never heard you before?
It’s kind of like Indie Folk Meets Pop! The songs are mostly very indie, If you like Sufjan Stevens or Regina Spektor you’re most likely going to like the album!

The combination of the harp with other instruments make each song a unique and different, a sweet combination. Is there a special moment in which you recommend listening to your album?
Garden is a song that uses many instruments, including a backwords guitar solo during the chorus. This one is phycadelic. I’m Just Tryin to be Your Friend is also a favorite of many listeners – it also has more of a ‘band’ feel to it!

Who would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers and why? (this is a question we always do, the histerycal way to show that your are fanatic of a band, singer, person...)
Haha! Well if this is asking me to throw a Hello Kitty knickers to someone in which I adore them/their music... I would definately replay with Sufjan Stevens J

Unlike other commercial indie bands, your style would be indie in the indie-folk. Do you think is this a drawback or it’s just a matter that you have to play more so people can listen to know your music?
I don’t think it’s a drawback, I think indie music is totally in right now, so hopefully more people will be looking for different sounds. We will see what happens in the coming year, since me, Alex, and Cian are all full time college students! We will definitely be playing a lot this summer.

Mikaela Davis European Tour 2013?
Oh, I wish! Probably not this year but I REALLY want to tour in Europe. If I make enough fans in Europe, this will be an easier thing to accomplish (hint, hint.. J)!!!

We finish the interview with your single “Dreaming”. Tell us something about this song.
This song is pretty much about me daydreaming on plane rides to San Francisco. Although my brother and I live in New York, our dad lives in San Francisco, so about twice a year we take the long flight over there to visit. He is a big part of the reason why I started writing songs, as more of a therapy to cope with my father moving accross the country.

Mikaela Davis: Harpindie

¿Mikaela Davis European Tour 2013?
Oh, ¡Eso espero!

Mo Kenney: indie folk rock made in Canada

ver el texto en castellano

If we ask ourselves what have in common Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Yukon Blonde and Tegan and Sara with the artist of our today’s interview… Ok they are all indies but… What else? Canada.

It’s not surprising that it’s the country with the biggest production of maple syrup, but also, it’s not surprising the quality of its indie bands.Don’t be foolish because of her 22 years-old: Mo Kenney has shocked us since the first until the last song of her homonymous album. Mature songs and a unique style: Indie Folk-Rock from Halifax (New Scotland). The cool Mo Kenney.

When did you begin to compose with the guitar?
I started playing guitar when I was 11 years old. I didn't begin to write songs on the guitar until I was about 15!

What kind of guitar/s do you use? Some kind of special acoustic guitar, maybe?
I play a Hensel Parlor acoustic guitar. It was made in Canada by a man whose name was Arthur Hensel around 1930. I also have a Gibson Les Paul electric that I don't use as often, a Seagull acoustic and a Godin electric guitar.

Your debut album is formed by 10 songs. It’s that a resume of the 10 commandments of your life?
My album is basically a collection of songs I have written from the age of 16 to the present. I had written quite a few songs in that time so I picked the best ones for the record.

The album has been produced by the prestigious Label from Toronto “Pheromone Recordings” in collaboration with Joel Plaskett, a renamed indie artist and “New Scotland Records”. An album that has been two years until the publication, so it’s obvious that all of you have been very careful with the debut LP… Did you enjoy recording with such a good company as this?
Joel and I began working on my album in April of 2011. We were able to take our time on it because we were working around each other's schedule's. The recording process was amazing for me because until then I hadn't been able to record in a legitimate studio. It was amazing to hear my songs after they'd been recorded because the quality is so professional. It was a very exciting process for me!

What did mean for you to collaborate with Joel?
It was an awesome experience being able to collaborate with Joel. I've been a fan of his music since I was a teenager so it was incredible to work with him. I found it easy working with him as a producer because we both had the same vision for the album. It was great having his experience because he really knew how to get the sounds I was looking for. I learned a lot during our studio sessions.

Which one of these two collaborations will you choose in an hypothetic case (even one of them is a fiction character): Choose an Anne Shirley poem and make a song about it or make a duet with Shania Twain?
Haha it would be funny to make a duet with Shania Twain so I guess I'd have to choose her. My mom would be very happy.

At Who will you throw a Hello Kitty Knickers or underpants and why?
If I could throw my underpants at anyone it would have been Elliott Smith! Unfortunately he's no longer among the living, so that will never happen. I guess Sigur Ros will be the lucky band instead.

Can we expect a Tour outside America nearly? Europe, maybe?
I would love to tour Europe! I'm hoping music will bring me to many different parts of the world to play, it's just a matter of time!

To listen to your music is better if you do it drinking something: beer, wine, maple syrup…?
It's best to listen to my music after drinking a mixture of bacon, maple syrup and canadian beer. Only then will you get the full effect.

How many times have you been left looking like  a “sucker”?
I've only been left looking like a "sucker" once, so I wrote a song about it.

Si pudiera lanzar mis calzoncillos a alguien sería a Ellioth Smith!

Yes! We've catched 5 mice. Today we interview Trapped Mice, indie-folk quintet of Edimburgh, one of the lastest and interesting bands of the indie scene of the scottish capital. Scotland where indie “Tartaned”  shirts were originally invented.

Your debut album titled "An Ending", why have you chosen this title?
Hello! Yes, that's the name of the opening track on the album, but why did we choose it? Hard to say really, I was thinking a lot about the end of the world when I was writing some of the songs for the album (particulary "The Devil Wandered In and "Demons"), and I liked the idea that intro track was a kind of soundtrack to that; to the chaos and emotion as the bombs fall and the world plunges slowly into an eternal winter. But also think we were just being a bit cheeky! Hopefully people won't press stop after that track because they think that's the whole album.

Armellodie Records is an independent record label that focuses on Scottish indie, folk, rock bands. Could you explain how has been the recording process for the album?
Well we recorded it all ourselves over a few months, mainly in my bedroom, and then we had it professionally mastered at a studio in Edinburgh. We sent it to Al and Scott at Armellodie on the offchance that they might like to release it, and for some reason they said yes! Which was very nice for us, since they've been one of our favourite labels for a while, with loads of great bands.

Accordions, violins, organs, and other instruments ... We were struck by the contrast of the heartbreaking voice of Mr. Tilling with Miss Miller delicate melodies. Your songs stand out as being intense and emotional. Is that what makes you different from other indie-folk bands? Haha, yeah, why not. I think any folk music fans who came to see us play might be a bit disappointed when they saw us screaming and throwing our guitars on the floor and generally making a horrible squealing racket.

Listening "Winter Sun" has reminded us somehow REM in their 90s. Is a band that has influenced you in any way? What are your influences?
Ooh that's a new one! And quite flattering I would say. I do really like REM, but they aren't a band I listen to much at all. I remember my parents playing them a lot when I was a kid so I guess that's had some kind of lasting effect that I've been unaware of until now! The album has been compared to bands like Okkervil River and Bright Eyes, who I love. There are so many bands and songwriters who I adore, and I find it hard to tell which ones creep in and influence our songs, and I'm sure it's the same for the rest of the band.

Who would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers o underpants and why?
Wow! I don't know where to start! I think I would have to choose Nick Cave, because I'm a huge huge fan, and also I think it would be funny to see how he might react.

Describe your music  to someone who does not know you.
Loud songs and quiet songs with lots of words and shouting.

 ¿Rugby o football?

Rugby or football?
I think Barry is the only one in the band who would really care about this answer, and he would definitely say rugby, but that's a game for posh boys where I'm from so I'm gonna have to say football (sorry Barry).

Will we have the chance of seeing you playing in any spanish city soon?
I hope so! We would love to play in Spain. To Be Continued...

Your wishes for 2013...
To play in Spain! We are busy working on lots of new songs at the moment and hopefully we should be ready to start recording them soon, so maybe a second album might be on the cards at some point...

We finish the interview with your single debut “Mona Lisa”. Can you explain what does the song mean for you?
This is a song about being confused and unsure of yourself, and questioning the point of writing and making music when there are great artists who have come before you who have already done it better than you ever could.
