Hoy en la
entrevista histérica: BOREALS, rara avis del panorama indie electrónico
nacional. Este
atípico trío barcelonés, crea sonidos que se unen en atmósferas que se propagan
radialmente como la aurora boreal. Vale, no
nos hemos tomado la medicación hoy... Mejor os dejamos con su entrevista.
Today in
the hysterical interview: BOREALS, rara avis of the Spanish indie scene. This
atypical trio from Barcelona, make sounds that join and spread radially all
together in atmospheres like the aurora borealis. Ok, we didn't take our pills today… better if we go with the interview.
Post rock
electrónico, electro-ambient-experimental, electrónica instrumental... ¿Cómo
definimos vuestra música?
Las etiquetas siempre son difíciles de poner, pero creo que en ese sentido lo habéis hecho mejor que nosotros! En realidad preferimos ver que dicen los demás a tener que mojarnos. A veces es muy divertido porque hay gente que llega a decir cosas que nunca habíamos pensado (¿dream pop?), o comparaciones con grupos que ni siquiera conocemos.
Electronic
post rock, electro ambient-experimental, instrumental electronic… How can we
define your music?
Tags are always
difficult, but I think that you have done it better than us! Actually, we prefer
to wait and see what people say and think about our music. Sometimes it’s really
funny because people say things that could never imagine (dream pop?), or
compares us to bands that we don´t even know.
Habéis
publicado Rome, un EP de nueve canciones con el sello Irregular. Suponemos que
"parir" un disco debe ser una liberación y algo muy satisfactorio.
¿Qué se esconde detrás del nacimiento de Rome? ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de
crear la banda, definir el estilo y componer los temas?
Rome no lo sacamos con Irregular, fue una demo que grabamos en casa -compartimos piso los tres- y un día decidimos colgarla en bandcamp como EP, con portada de nuestro amigo Joan Bennassar, que es un artista increíble. No lo concebimos como un disco, eran canciones que habíamos hecho para pasar el tiempo y aunque eran nueve decidimos que sería un EP. Se podría decir que Rome es producto de nuestra convivencia. Y fue lo que nos llevó a sacar el Grecia EP con Irregular.
You have
published Rome, a 9 songs EP with Irregular Label. We guess that, to make an
album must be like a great liberation and very satisfactory. What hides behind
the birth of Rome? Which has been the process of creating the band, defining
the style and compose the music?
We didn´t
publish Rome with Irregular, it was a demo that we recorded at home – the three
of us are flat mates- and one day we decided to upload it in bandcamp as an EP,
with the cover of our friend Joan Bennassar, an incredible artist. We didn’t
conceive it as an album, they were just songs that we made just to have fun and
even they were nine songs, we decided to record them as an EP. So we can say
Rome is product of our action. And that’s what made us to release Grecia EP
with Irregular.
Vosotros
no sois un grupo al uso, en el sentido de que no hay instrumentos clásicos de
los que se ven en las formaciones Pop o Rock de toda la vida. Sin embargo, el
sonido y la calidad de la escucha de vuestros temas es brutal. ¿Sois Juan
Palomo, yo me lo guiso, yo me lo como a la hora de editar, programar,
masterizar y todas esas cosas que acaban en -ar? ¿Con qué apoyos habéis
contado?
Siempre es bueno tener muchos puntos de vista sobre el trabajo. El Grecia EP lo hicimos con Jano (Monki Valley) y Vicente. Ahora el disco lo estamos grabando con Charlie, Iván, y Alex de Lasers, en su estudio Newton Audio. También contamos con el apoyo de nuestros amigos que nos dan su opinión sobre los temas y la gente de Irregular Label.
You are
not a traditional band, as well as you don’t use traditional instruments that
we are used to see in Pop or Rock bands, though, the sound and quality of
listening to your songs is awesome. Are you “self-made-guys” when you edit,
program, master, etc.? Have you counted on someone’s collaboration?
It’s
always good to have different points of view of the work. We did Grecia EP with
Jano (Monki Valley) and Vicente. Now we are recording the album with Charlie,
Iván, and Alex from Lasers, in their studio Newton Audio. We also have the
support of our friends, which give us their opinions, and Irregular Label
people.
El primer
videoclip que Boreals, ha sido exitosamente financiado a través de la
iniciativa de Crowdfunding que hicisteis rodar en las redes sociales. ¿Cómo fue
la experiencia?
Bueno detrás de cualquier proyecto de crowdfunding siempre está esa ansiedad por llegar al objetivo de recaudación, e intentar que las recompensas a los mecenas sean atractivas. Por suerte lo conseguimos, y fue una buena experiencia porque no podíamos financiarlo por nuestra cuenta. Pero de cara a futuros videos intentaremos hacerlo de forma más convencional y concentrarnos más en el vídeo que en cómo financiarlo.
Your
first video has been successfully sponsored along the crowdfunding idea that
you made popular in social media. How was the experience?
Well, behind
every crowdfunding project there is always the anxious of arriving to the
collection goal, and try to make attractive the rewards to our patrons.
Fortunately we did it, and it was a good experience because we couldn’t collect
it by ourselves. But facing our next videos, we will try to make it more
conventionally and focus more on the video than on the way to collect the money
for it.
Como
hemos dicho en la entradilla a la entrevista, sois un grupo atípico en España.
Nos vienen a la cabeza grandes de vuestro estilo como Mogwai. ¿Son vuestra
referencia?
Mogwai es un grupo que nos gusta mucho a los tres, y sin duda han sido una influencia importante. Pero entre los tres tenemos gustos muy heterogéneos con cosas en común y otras que no. Si tuviéramos que elegir un grupo que nos fascina por igual sería Mice Parade.
As we
have said, you are an atypical band in Spain. We think about great bands such
as Mogwai. Are they your reference?
Mogwai is
a band that we all like very much, and obviously, has been a great influence.
But the three of us have heterogeneous likes with common and uncommon things.
If we have to choose a band that we all love, it would be Mice Parade.
¿A quién
lanzaríais un par de bragas/canzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué?
A Monki Valley (monkivalley.bandcamp.com) porque sí (su último EP Changes es brutal!).

At Monki
Valley (monkivalley.bandcamp.com), just because we want (their last EP Changes
is great!).
¿Cómo es
un concierto de Boreals? ¿Usáis, por ejemplo, el apoyo de visuales para crear
atmósfera?
El mismo que nos hace las portadas, Joan Bennassar, es el que se encarga de los visuales en directo; es un miembro más del grupo. Los directos son muy importantes para nosotros porque nos permite presentar nuestras canciones con más intensidad que la que se escucha en las grabaciones, y además porque nos lo pasamos muy bien.
How is a
Boreals concert? Do you use, for example, the support of visuals to create
atmospheres?
The
person who makes us the covers, Joan Bennassar, is the person who controls the
visuals live; he is another member of the band. Live shows are very important
for us because they allow us to present our songs with a plus of intensity than
the one you can listen on our recorded songs, and also because we have very
good times.
Para
próximos EP's ¿Tenéis pensado evolucionar hacia otros sonidos, explorar nuevas
tendencias...? ¿Cuáles?
Ahora mismo estamos trabajando en nuestro primer LP, que está quedando más instrumental que nuestros trabajos anteriores. Ya lo hemos dicho pero lo estamos grabando en el estudio de nuestros amigos Lasers. El hecho de trabajar con ellos seguramente influya de alguna forma el resultado final, y creemos que para bien!
For next
EP’s, are you thinking about exploring new sounds, new trends…? Which ones?
Nowadays
we are working on our first LP, and it’s being more instrumental than our
previous. We have said it before but, we are recording it at the studio of our
friends Lasers. The fact of being working with them must have influence someway
in the final result, and we think that for good!
