Neuman: Spanish indie caress

With three albums on the street and their recent signing with Subterfuge Records, Neuman (Paco Román and Fernando Lillo) holds on as one of the most important indie groups in Spain.

Simplicity and tenderness even in their shoegazer songs, makes them the Spanish indie caress. Songs that you never get tired of and that you can use like green tea liquid soap:  As much for relaxing than for recharge one’s batteries. 

If you don’t know them and you have a little of musical sensibility, we propose you to listen ““I have the will”. You won’t forget the first listen.

Paco Román answers the hysterical interview to the good boys of Neuman. 

Paco began with another band “La fábrica de la luz” and when it got dissolved, he continued composing until he found Fernando, pianist that completed Neuman’s equation. Which were your aspirations when you began to play together?

Years before Fernando came in, I played with a lot of musicians, I used piano many times but when I heard Fernando with his piano and we began to play together there was something special, some chemistry, we felt the same and he felt identified with what I was expressing in my songs, the time gave us the reason and we have been growing up together.

You have, on our opinion, some of the most beautiful ballads and mid times of Spanish indie scene. Which are your sources of inspiration for this kind of compositions?

Thank you very much!

Above all, what we try to communicate are moods: Love, friendships… are the main arguments that I talk about. This emotion, to keep the song’s creative moment, is what I try to endure on the LP in order to keep all its emotion.

All your tracks give off some kind of melancholy, like a kind of pretty sadness that recovers your songs from the top to the end leaving you like if, suddenly, someone tokes you the blanket in winter. Is it hard for you to create happy stages for your songs?

Our previous albums are melancholic, although some songs are luminous, and they don’t stop being covered with sadness. Is the personal factor what defines a bit all this stuff. It doesn’t mean that I was sad in those albums; it’s only that I got this nostalgia. On the last LP “By fear/I love” I have changed the city I live in, now I live in Granada and love again, friendship, has made that in this point the songs are maybe more “luminous”. Now I can clearly see that in Neuman’s albums it is very important what I am living at the moment.

An album per year. I love it to be like this, it says a lot about us and except “Bye fear / Hi love” the entire albums circle 77 min. of time. For 2014 we’ll make our best album.  We are working on it, we are taking it slow ‘cause we have been 3 years without stopping 15 days non-stop.

You have recently signed with Subterfuge Records. Record Label champion of independent music in Spain. Have you decided another goal in mid-term? Something that you’d like to achieve as a band the next years?

It has been the boost that we needed, something fantastic, very exciting, on a short term we have a surprise that we’ll reveal shortly. To us is very important and we appreciate very much to have been signed up. Without any doubt is a big responsibility to keep going on and making great albums beside them.

At whom will you throw a of Hello Kitty knickers?

I hope I could throw them to Lou Barlow, with a bit of luck, now that “Sebadoh” are together again… hehe

The message  I wanted to communicate is bye fears, keep beside the things that block you from being yourself, keep beside what people can think about you, the fear of giving important steps in your life and say hello to adventure, to new loves, say hello to the fact that everything can go better, say hello to a new life, because I think that our lives are too short for being unhappy, that’s how was born “Bye fear / Hi love”, it was all very visceral.

Con 3 discos en el mercado y su reciente fichaje por Subterfuge Records, Neuman (Paco Román y Fernando Lillo) se afianza como uno de los grupos independientes más importantes de nuestro País.

La simplicidad y delicadeza hasta en sus canciones más shoegaze les convierte en la caricia del indie nacional. Canciones de las que nunca te cansas y que puedes usar como el gel de ducha de Té Verde: Tanto para relajarte como para cargarte de pilas.

Si no los conoces y tienes un mínimo de sensibilidad musical, te proponemos que escuches “I have the will”. Su primera escucha es inolvidable.

Paco Román responde la entrevista histérica de los niños buenos de Neuman. 

Paco empezó con otra banda “la fábrica de la luz” y tras su disolución continuó componiendo hasta encontrarse con Fernando, pianista que completó la fórmula Neuman. ¿Cuáles eran vuestras pretensiones al empezar a rodar juntos? 

Años antes de que entrara Fernando tocaba con muchos músicos. Utilicé el piano en muchas ocasiones pero cuando escuche a Fernando con su piano y nos pusimos a tocar juntos había algo especial, había química, sentíamos lo mismo y él se sentía identificado con lo que yo expresaba en las composiciones, el tiempo nos ha dado la razón y hemos ido creciendo juntos.

Tenéis, a nuestro parecer, algunas de las baladas y medio tiempos más bonitos del panorama indie español. ¿Cuáles son vuestras fuentes de inspiración para este tipo de composiciones?

Sobre todo son estados de ánimo lo que intentamos  transmitir,: El amor, la amistad… son los principales argumentos de los que hablo; esas emociones, conservar el momento de creación de la canción, es lo que intento que perdure luego en el disco para que conserve toda su emoción.

Todos vuestros temas emanan cierta melancolía, una especie de tristeza bonita que recubre vuestras canciones de principio a fin dejándote como si de repente, te quitaran la manta en invierno. ¿Os cuesta crear escenarios alegres para vuestras canciones? 

Los anteriores discos son melancólicos, aunque hay algunas canciones más luminosas no dejan de estar impregnados de tristeza. Es el factor personal lo que define un poco todo esto; en esos discos no significa que estuviera triste, es simplemente que me salía esa nostalgia. En el último trabajo “Bye fear / Hi love” he cambiado de ciudad, ahora vivo en Granada y el amor de nuevo, la amistad, han hecho que en este momento las canciones hayan salido quizás más “luminosas”. Ahora puedo ver con claridad que en los discos de Neuman tiene un factor muy importante lo que esté viviendo en ese momento.

Volvamos a los tiempos de clase de Mates. Hallad la X:

Disco por año, me encanta que sea así, dice mucho de nosotros. Además son discos, excepto  “Bye fear / Hi love”, que rondan los 77 min de duración. Para 2014 vamos a hacer nuestro mejor disco, estamos trabajando en él, nos lo estamos tomando con tranquilidad, llevamos 3 años sin parar 15 días seguidos.

Acabáis de fichar por Subterfuge Records. Discográfica abanderada de la música independiente de este País. ¿Os habéis marcado alguna otra meta a medio plazo? ¿Algo que queráis conseguir como banda en los próximos años?

Sin duda ha sido la inyección que necesitábamos, es algo fantástico, muy ilusionante. A corto plazo tenemos una sorpresa que desvelaremos en breve, sobre todo para nosotros es muy importante y valoramos mucho que nos hayan fichado; sin duda es una responsabilidad, seguir dándolo todo y haciendo grandes disco junto a ellos.

¿A quién lanzaríais un par de bragas/calzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué? 

Ojala se las pudiera lanzar a Lou Barlow,  con un poco de suerte ahora que se han vuelto a juntar “Sebadoh”,…… jeje

El mensaje que quería transmitir es adiós miedos, dejar a un lado las cosas que te impiden no ser tú mismo, dejar a un lado el que pensaran de ti, el miedo a dar pasos importantes en tu vida… Y decir hola a la aventura, a los nuevos amores. Decir hola a que todo puede ir mejor, decir hola a una nueva vida.  Porque pienso que vivimos demasiado poco para no ser felices.  Así nació “Bye fear / Hi love”. Fue todo muy visceral.

Autumn Comets: Simplicity's Success

These guys could be from USA or UK. But they are from Madrid (lucky us, for having them near). The key of its success lies in what we call “capsule songs” (that ones that, when you listen, keep you floating in its atmosphere). Soft and simple songs, just like the Persian cat of your crazy neighbour. They have just published their second LP “Moriréis en Camboya” with Subterfuge Records and they have found an opening to answer our hysterical, hysterical questions. Here they are:

In fact you are a little bit comets: You began with the band in 2007. You self-produced an EP (Autumn Comets) and an LP (Parades), and now you publish your second LP with Subterfuge Records. What do you expect with the album? Which goals have you scored to win after its launch?

Basically keep playing. The more cities we play, the best. And playing outside Spain, if possible. We think that with Subterfuge it’s going to be easy to take a step forward but there’s not an aim or a goal beyond that: Keep on playing and composing, and publish another album. Once again and again like if there is no tomorrow.

Your new LP has just been born. Did you find any difference between self-production and record with a label like Subterfuge, with the gift and means that that it supposes?

 When the record was not published yet we were realizing the differences. Subterfuge is doing this for 20 years and they know perfectly how it works. It’s basic the support that an structure that this one can be for any band, we hope to arrive to more media, and with that, arrive to more people, we also hope (well, we trust) to be at the height of this.

As far as here, we just can suspect that working together is going to be very easy. That’s basic.

To define a band/artist musically is difficult and quite drag because you don’t use to agree with the music tags you get. For us, Autumn Comets is, basically, Post Rock. ¿Do you agree? How would you define Autumn Comets’s music?

It’s complicated. If you say post-rock you use to think about 7 minutes instrumental songs, with continuous up’s and down’s. And we do have long songs, with a lot of instrumental weight and intensity going up and down, but not in the way that a pure post-rock band would do. It could be post-rock moved to the extreme. To the less post-rock extreme. What we do like and it also happens quite frequently, is that people says that we sound in a very personal way, hardly to fit in a specific style. To us, to have this personal sound is very important.

You genre has a lot of fans in Spain, but not many artists. Spell, if you can, 3 or 4 Spanish band or artists that you could feel musically identified with. 

Without being specifically in our music genre, we feel very kindred to Incendios (Atención Tsunami), Kermit (we toured with them not long ago), Allfits, Cuchillo, Toundra, segunda apnea…

You have collaborated with Lourdes Hernández (Russian Red). Required question and you will have to get involved: Is she as fussy as she seems? (Don’t worry, she doesn’t read our blog).

Well, maybe she reads it! Even if she does or not, we must be true and not, she isn’t. We don’t understand all this “gossip” to someone that has been so kind with us, that has arrived where she is because she deserves it and that, in fact, is such a good person as she is.

Another  luxury collaboration is with Mr. Micah P. Hinson, who you also accompanied in some shows in our country. How could you get his collaboration? What have you learned from this experience?

Both collaborations where with the previous album, the truth is that it is almost difficult to remember. Manu met him touring, and recorded with him the strings of his penultimate album, after that we showed him a pair of songs and he cooperated in the one which he felt more comfortable. A lot of emotion while listening, really.

At who would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers/underwear and why?

To “Cómo vivir en el campo” bass player. Which is also our bass player, casually.

Recommend us an album each one of you, to buy in 2013 (appart from yours).

Why your version of Paper Plans from M.I.A. is coolest than the original? Why? 

We should ask her what she thinks, uf… We doubt that ours is better, it’s difficult to improve such a great hit… Thank you as far as we are concerned anyway, we were trying to adapt a hit to this personal sound that we were explaining you before.

Autumn Comets: El triunfo de lo sencillo

Estos chicos bien podrían ser de EE.UU o Reino Unido. Pero son de Madrid (suerte para nosotros, que los tenemos cerquita). El secreto de su éxito está en que hacen lo que nosotras llamamos “canciones cápsula” (esas que cuando las escuchas te dejan flotando dentro de su atmósfera). Canciones sencillas y suaves, como el gato persa de tu vecina loca. Acaban de sacar su segundo LP “Moriréis en Camboya” con Subterfuge Records y han buscado un hueco para responder a nuestras histéricas, histéricas preguntas. Aquí las tenéis:

Un poco cometas sí que sois: Empezasteis con la formación en 2007. Auto producís un EP (Autumn Comets) y un LP (Parades) y ahora, en 2013, lanzáis el segundo LP “Moriréis en Camboya” con Subterfuge Records. ¿Qué esperáis conseguir con este disco? ¿Qué metas os habéis marcado tras su lanzamiento?

Fundamentalmente seguir tocando. Tocar en cuantas  más ciudades mejor, y salir fuera de España si es posible. Creemos que  con Subterfuge va a ser más sencillo dar un paso más, pero no hay un objetivo o una meta concreta más allá de esa: seguir tocando, componiendo, y sacar otro disco. Una y otra vez, como si no hubiera un mañana.

Tenéis el nuevo disco calentito. ¿Habéis notado mucha diferencia de la autoproducción a grabar con una compañía como Subterfuge, con las facilidades y medios que esto supone?

Cuando el disco aún no había salido ya estábamos notando la diferencia. Subterfuge lleva 20 años en esto y saben cómo funciona el asunto perfectamente. Es fundamental el apoyo que da una estructura como esta a cualquier banda, esperamos llegar a más medios, y con ello a más gente, claro y esperamos también (bueno, confiamos en ello) estar a la altura. Hasta el momento sólo podemos intuir que trabajar juntos va a ser muy fácil. Eso es básico.

Definir a un artista/grupo a nivel musical es difícil, y un poco rollo además porque nunca soléis estar de acuerdo con las etiquetas que se os ponen. Para nosotras, Autumn Comets es, básicamente, Post Rock. ¿Estáis de acuerdo? ¿Cómo definiríais vosotros la música de Autumn Comets?

Es complicado. Si dices post-rock piensas en canciones de 7 minutos, instrumentales, con constante subida y bajada. Y tenemos canciones largas, con mucho peso instrumental y con subidas y bajadas de intensidad, pero no del modo en el que podría moverse un grupo puramente de post-rock. Podría ser post-rock llevado a un extremo, al extremo menos post-rock. Lo que sí nos gusta y además pasa con cierta frecuencia es que nos dicen que sonamos a algo muy personal y difícilmente “encajable” en algún estilo. Para nosotros tener ese sonido personal es muy importante.

Vuestro género tiene muchos fans en España, pero no muchos artistas. Nombradnos, si podéis, a 3 ó 4 bandas o artistas españoles con los que os podáis sentir identificados musicalmente.

Sin ser específicamente de nuestro estilo sí nos sentimos muy afines a Incendios (Atención Tsunami), Kermit (con los que hemos girado hace poco), Allfits, Cuchillo, Toundra, segunda apnea…

Colaborasteis con Lourdes Hernández (Russian Red). Pregunta obligada, y toca mojarse: ¿Es tan repipi como parece? (No os preocupéis, que no nos lee).

¡Pues igual sí que nos lee! Nos lea o no, hay que decir la verdad, y no, no lo es. No entendemos tanta ‘’crítica’’ a alguien que con nosotros se ha portado tan bien, que está donde está porque se lo ha ganado y que, realmente, es tan buena persona como ella.

Otra colaboración de lujo que habéis hecho, es con el Sr. Micah P. Hinson, al que además acompañasteis en alguna actuación en nuestro País. ¿Cómo conseguisteis la colaboración? ¿Qué habéis aprendido de la experiencia?

Ambas colaboraciones fueron  en el disco anterior ya, la verdad es que casi costaba recordarlo. Manu coincidió con él girando y grabó con él las cuerdas de su penúltimo disco, tras eso le pasamos un par de canciones y colaboró en la que se sintió más cómodo. Mucha emoción al escucharlo, la verdad.

¿A quién lanzaríais un par de bragas/calzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué?

 Al bajista de Cómo vivir en el Campo, que resulta que es el mismo que el nuestro.

Recomendadnos un disco cada uno, para comprar en el 2013. (Aparte del vuestro).

¿Por qué mola más vuestra versión de Paper Planes de M.I.A. que la propia original? ¿Por qué?

Habría que preguntarle a ella qué opina, uf. Dudamos que sea mejor, es complicado mejorar semejante hitazo… Gracias por la parte que nos toca de todos modos, para nosotros se trataba de adaptar un hitazo a ese sonido personal que os contábamos más arriba.

TUYA: Por fin un grupo como éste

TUYA, banda formada por David, Héctor, Juan y Brian con toques brit pop pero un sonido muy particular ha accedido a responder nuestras 10 preguntas histéricas. ¡Aquí las tenéis!

TUYA… ¿El nombre es por el pronombre posesivo, iniciales de algún amor secreto…?

Pues también puede ser un volcán, una planta…

Lo que ahora es el grupo que conocemos, era un proyecto inicialmente de David y finalmente se completó como banda. ¿Cómo y por qué tuvo lugar esta transición?

Fue algo que surgió por si solo; la necesidad de tocar en directo las canciones de ‘Own’ me hizo ver que hacia falta una banda. Y como al final el disco lo hicimos entre todos, no tiene sentido seguir diciendo que es mi proyecto.

Cantar en inglés. ¿Necesidad por el propio nacimiento de las composiciones o estrategia para conquistar el mundo?

Para conquistar el mundo no importa que hables inglés. El mundo ya lo hemos conquistado, solo nos falta decir de donde venimos.

Aparte de letras en inglés, tenéis una imagen y sonido muy Brittish. ¿Es esto algo premeditado? O sois más británicos que la sopa Campbell’s…

Somos más de fabada, cocido montañés, madrileño y marmitako.

¿A quién lanzaríais unas bragas/calzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué?

A vosotras, para que los quemaseis mientras hacéis la ouija.

Estáis fichados por Subterfuge Records, una de las discográficas Indie con más solera de España. ¿Os supuso esto alguna presión por posibles “etiquetas” sobre vuestro género musical?

No. Ya trabajamos con ellos antes en otros proyectos. No creo que debamos sentir presión por el qué dirán en ningún caso.

Lleváis ya algunos meses con el disco Waterspot en la calle y lo habéis podido rodar, aún antes de publicarlo, por algunos escenarios como el Primavera Sound (#OARGHHH!) o el FIB. ¿Cómo está siendo la acogida del LP?

Pues lenta. Nosotros ya lo estamos madurando, sobre todo a la hora de llevarlo al directo. Pero la gente todavía está empezando a escucharlo ahora.

Lanzad 3 deseos musicales de TUYA para el 2013 y nosotras nos encargaremos de que se cumplan.

Escribir, grabar y tocar. Nos conformamos con poco. Ya ves.

¿Os gustaría sonar parecido a algún grupo en vuestros próximos discos? ¿Algún grupo cuyo sonido os guste especialmente?

Nos gustaría encontrar un hilo más común entre las diferentes ideas que tenemos, definir un poco más lo que estamos consiguiendo ahora en directo.

Nos gustan mucho diferentes ambientes de algunos discos, sobre todo cosas de ambient o electrónica como Fuck Buttons o Brian Eno.

¿Cuál es vuestra canción fetiche del disco y por qué?

Quizá sea ‘Barely comes the sun’. Es una de las que más contentos estamos con el resultado tanto en ejecución como en sonido. Aunque no defina mucho el sonido del grupo, quizá si deje ver el concepto general que buscamos.
