Mikaela Davis, indie harpist and vocalist, has answered to the Histerycal Interview.

The 30th June was released the debut album, Mikaela Davis selftittled, was recorded at Red Booth, a local tiny studio that focuses in indie artists. Is it cool to be an indie hapist? Here she is.

The harp is an instrument unusual to play in an indie band. Can you explain us what an indie harpist is? Is it a difficult instrument to play?

Well, all I do is write songs in an indie style! It’s still on a regular concert grand harp! Harp can be difficult. There are 47 strings and 7 pedals at the bottom. You must be able to play the harp while changing the pedals at the same time! Each pedal changes a certain pitch (ex. A, B, or C) from flat, natural, to sharp.

You‘ve been playing the harp since you were 8 years old. When did you decide to experiment with the harp and indie music?

When I was in middle school I used to write songs on the piano. When I was in high school I decided it would be much cooler to write songs on the harp instead! That’s when I started writing more. I showed some songs to my friend Alex, who ended up being the drummer in my band. After that we added a guitarist too!

Is not the same carrying a guitar than an harp, isn’t it? What are the difficulties you may come across when preparing the concerts?

Breaking a string is always my worst fear! I broke a string at one of my last shows right before we played so I had to take 10 minutes to put a new one on (good thing I always bring extra strings with me). I move my harp around so much though, it’s not too much of a pain to bring around.

We know by facebook, twitter and other social networks that you have a cat named Ringo. Are the Beatles an inspiration for you? Have you other influences?

Yes!! That is excatly why I named my cat Ringo. The Beatles are so amazing to me because of how much their music changed but was still amazing. They never got old! My other biggest influences are Sufjan Stevens and Elliott Smith.

How would you describe your music to people who never heard you before?

It’s kind of like Indie Folk Meets Pop! The songs are mostly very indie, If you like Sufjan Stevens or Regina Spektor you’re most likely going to like the album!

The combination of the harp with other instruments make each song a unique and different, a sweet combination. Is there a special moment in which you recommend listening to your album?

Garden is a song that uses many instruments, including a backwords guitar solo during the chorus. This one is phycadelic. I’m Just Tryin to be Your Friend is also a favorite of many listeners – it also has more of a ‘band’ feel to it!

Who would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers and why? (this is a question we always do, the histerycal way to show that your are fanatic of a band, singer, person...)

Haha! Well if this is asking me to throw a Hello Kitty knickers to someone in which I adore them/their music... I would definately replay with Sufjan Stevens J

Unlike other commercial indie bands, your style would be indie in the indie-folk. Do you think is this a drawback or it’s just a matter that you have to play more so people can listen to know your music?

I don’t think it’s a drawback, I think indie music is totally in right now, so hopefully more people will be looking for different sounds. We will see what happens in the coming year, since me, Alex, and Cian are all full time college students! We will definitely be playing a lot this summer.

Mikaela Davis European Tour 2013?

Oh, I wish! Probably not this year but I REALLY want to tour in Europe. If I make enough fans in Europe, this will be an easier thing to accomplish (hint, hint.. J)!!!

We finish the interview with your single “Dreaming”. Tell us something about this song.

This song is pretty much about me daydreaming on plane rides to San Francisco. Although my brother and I live in New York, our dad lives in San Francisco, so about twice a year we take the long flight over there to visit. He is a big part of the reason why I started writing songs, as more of a therapy to cope with my father moving accross the country.

Mikaela Davis, arpista indie y vocalista, ha accedido a someterse a nuestra entrevista histérica.

El 30 de junio salió el LP debut; un álbum titulado como ella misma. ¿Qué mejor manera de debutar? El disco se ha grabado en Red Booth, un estudio modesto que apuesta por artistas indies peculiares. ¿Se puede molar tocando el arpa? Ella nos lo cuenta.

El arpa es un instrumento poco habitual en una banda indie. Explícanos qué es esto de ser una arpista indie exactamente. ¿Es un instrumento difícil de tocar?

Bueno, ¡Lo único que hago es escribir canciones con estilo indie! ¡Sigue estando en un concierto grande un arpa! El arpa puede ser difícil. Hay 47 cuerdas y 7 pedales al final. ¡Y debes saber tocarla mientras cambias los pedales! Cada pedal cambia a una secuencia de acordes distinta (por ejemplo La, Si o Do) desde  un sonido más pesado, natural o ácido.

Has tocado el arpa desde que tenías 8 años. ¿Cuando decidiste experimentar con el arpa y la música indie?

Cuando estaba en el colegio solía escribir canciones a piano. En el Instituto decidí que molaria más componer con el arpa. Es entonces cuando empecé a escribir más. Le enseñé algunas de mis canciones a mi amigo Álex, que al final ha terminado siendo el bateria de mi banda. Y después de esto se añadió un guitarrista también.

No es lo mismo transportar una guitarra que un arpa, eso esta claro. ¿Cuáles son las dificultades que os podéis encontrar a la hora de preparar los conciertos?

¡Romper una cuerda es siempre mi mayor miedo! Rompí una cuerda en uno de mis últimos shows justo antes de tocar así que tardé como 10 minutos en poner una nueva  (algo bueno es que siempre llevo cuerdas extra conmigo). Yo transporto el arpa, y realmente no es muy doloroso el llevarla arriba y abajo.

Por las redes sociales sabemos que tienes un gato que se llama Ringo. ¿Son los Beatles una fuente de inspiración para ti? ¿Tienes otras influencias?

¡¡Sí!! Es por eso exactamente por lo que llamé Ringo a mi gato. Los Beatles son tan alucinantes para mí porque por mucho que su música cambiara, seguia siendo genial. ¡Nunca envejecen! Mis otras mayores influencias son Sufjan Stevens y Elliott Smith.

¿Cómo describirías tu música a la gente que nunca te ha escuchado?

¡Sería como el Folk se encuentra con el Pop! Las canciones son casi siempre muy indies, si te gusta Sufjan Stevens o Regina Spektor ¡Entonces casi seguro que te encanta el álbum!

La combinación del arpa con otros instrumentos hace de cada canción una pieza única y diferente, una dulce combinación. ¿Hay algún momento especial en el que recomendarías escuchar el disco?

‘Garden’ es una canción en la que se usan muchos instrumentos, incluyendo un solo de guitarra al fondo, durante el coro. Es algo psicodélico. ‘I’m Just Tryin to be Your Friend’ también es una de las favoritas de muchos de los que la escuchan ¡Y también està más relacionada con el concepto ‘banda’!

.¿A quién lanzarías unas bragas/calzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué?

¡Jaja! Bueno, si esto significa que a quién lanzaría unas bragas de Hello Kitty a alguien que adore como músico... Sería sin duda alguna a Sufjan Stevens J

A diferencia de otras bandas indie más comerciales, vuestro estilo estaría en un indie dentro del indie-folk. ¿Supone esto un inconveniente o es cuestión de hacerse escuchar más?

No creo que sea un inconveniente, creo que la música indie esta muy de moda ahora, así que con suerte habrá gente intentando buscar diferentes sonidos. Ya veremos que pasa en este nuevo año. Alex, Cian y yo estudiamos todo el día, así que seguro que tenemos muchas actuaciones este verano.

¿Mikaela Davis European Tour 2013?

Oh, ¡Eso espero! Probablemente no este año pero REALMENTE quiero girar por Europa. Si hago suficientes fans en Europa será más fàcil de cumplir (indirecta, indirecta J )

Para terminar la entrevista enlazaremos con el single “Dreaming”. Explicanos algo sobre esta canción.

Esta canción tiene mucho que ver con mis sueños sobre un avión yendo a San Francisco. Pese a que mi hermano y yo vivimos en Nueva York, nuestro padre vive en San Francisco, así que sobre dos veces al año tomamos ese largo vuelo para visitarlo. Él es una gran parte de la razón por la que empecé a componer canciones, como terapia para superar que mi padre se trasladaba de ciudad.

Autumn Comets: Simplicity's Success

These guys could be from USA or UK. But they are from Madrid (lucky us, for having them near). The key of its success lies in what we call “capsule songs” (that ones that, when you listen, keep you floating in its atmosphere). Soft and simple songs, just like the Persian cat of your crazy neighbour. They have just published their second LP “Moriréis en Camboya” with Subterfuge Records and they have found an opening to answer our hysterical, hysterical questions. Here they are:

In fact you are a little bit comets: You began with the band in 2007. You self-produced an EP (Autumn Comets) and an LP (Parades), and now you publish your second LP with Subterfuge Records. What do you expect with the album? Which goals have you scored to win after its launch?

Basically keep playing. The more cities we play, the best. And playing outside Spain, if possible. We think that with Subterfuge it’s going to be easy to take a step forward but there’s not an aim or a goal beyond that: Keep on playing and composing, and publish another album. Once again and again like if there is no tomorrow.

Your new LP has just been born. Did you find any difference between self-production and record with a label like Subterfuge, with the gift and means that that it supposes?

 When the record was not published yet we were realizing the differences. Subterfuge is doing this for 20 years and they know perfectly how it works. It’s basic the support that an structure that this one can be for any band, we hope to arrive to more media, and with that, arrive to more people, we also hope (well, we trust) to be at the height of this.

As far as here, we just can suspect that working together is going to be very easy. That’s basic.

To define a band/artist musically is difficult and quite drag because you don’t use to agree with the music tags you get. For us, Autumn Comets is, basically, Post Rock. ¿Do you agree? How would you define Autumn Comets’s music?

It’s complicated. If you say post-rock you use to think about 7 minutes instrumental songs, with continuous up’s and down’s. And we do have long songs, with a lot of instrumental weight and intensity going up and down, but not in the way that a pure post-rock band would do. It could be post-rock moved to the extreme. To the less post-rock extreme. What we do like and it also happens quite frequently, is that people says that we sound in a very personal way, hardly to fit in a specific style. To us, to have this personal sound is very important.

You genre has a lot of fans in Spain, but not many artists. Spell, if you can, 3 or 4 Spanish band or artists that you could feel musically identified with. 

Without being specifically in our music genre, we feel very kindred to Incendios (Atención Tsunami), Kermit (we toured with them not long ago), Allfits, Cuchillo, Toundra, segunda apnea…

You have collaborated with Lourdes Hernández (Russian Red). Required question and you will have to get involved: Is she as fussy as she seems? (Don’t worry, she doesn’t read our blog).

Well, maybe she reads it! Even if she does or not, we must be true and not, she isn’t. We don’t understand all this “gossip” to someone that has been so kind with us, that has arrived where she is because she deserves it and that, in fact, is such a good person as she is.

Another  luxury collaboration is with Mr. Micah P. Hinson, who you also accompanied in some shows in our country. How could you get his collaboration? What have you learned from this experience?

Both collaborations where with the previous album, the truth is that it is almost difficult to remember. Manu met him touring, and recorded with him the strings of his penultimate album, after that we showed him a pair of songs and he cooperated in the one which he felt more comfortable. A lot of emotion while listening, really.

At who would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers/underwear and why?

To “Cómo vivir en el campo” bass player. Which is also our bass player, casually.

Recommend us an album each one of you, to buy in 2013 (appart from yours).

Liars, Dry The River, The Walkmen, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Two Gallants, Santigold… That’s what you will hear in our van.

Why your version of Paper Plans from M.I.A. is coolest than the original? Why? 

We should ask her what she thinks, uf… We doubt that ours is better, it’s difficult to improve such a great hit… Thank you as far as we are concerned anyway, we were trying to adapt a hit to this personal sound that we were explaining you before.

Autumn Comets: El triunfo de lo sencillo

Estos chicos bien podrían ser de EE.UU o Reino Unido. Pero son de Madrid (suerte para nosotros, que los tenemos cerquita). El secreto de su éxito está en que hacen lo que nosotras llamamos “canciones cápsula” (esas que cuando las escuchas te dejan flotando dentro de su atmósfera). Canciones sencillas y suaves, como el gato persa de tu vecina loca. Acaban de sacar su segundo LP “Moriréis en Camboya” con Subterfuge Records y han buscado un hueco para responder a nuestras histéricas, histéricas preguntas. Aquí las tenéis:

Un poco cometas sí que sois: Empezasteis con la formación en 2007. Auto producís un EP (Autumn Comets) y un LP (Parades) y ahora, en 2013, lanzáis el segundo LP “Moriréis en Camboya” con Subterfuge Records. ¿Qué esperáis conseguir con este disco? ¿Qué metas os habéis marcado tras su lanzamiento?

Fundamentalmente seguir tocando. Tocar en cuantas  más ciudades mejor, y salir fuera de España si es posible. Creemos que  con Subterfuge va a ser más sencillo dar un paso más, pero no hay un objetivo o una meta concreta más allá de esa: seguir tocando, componiendo, y sacar otro disco. Una y otra vez, como si no hubiera un mañana.

Tenéis el nuevo disco calentito. ¿Habéis notado mucha diferencia de la autoproducción a grabar con una compañía como Subterfuge, con las facilidades y medios que esto supone?

Cuando el disco aún no había salido ya estábamos notando la diferencia. Subterfuge lleva 20 años en esto y saben cómo funciona el asunto perfectamente. Es fundamental el apoyo que da una estructura como esta a cualquier banda, esperamos llegar a más medios, y con ello a más gente, claro y esperamos también (bueno, confiamos en ello) estar a la altura. Hasta el momento sólo podemos intuir que trabajar juntos va a ser muy fácil. Eso es básico.

Definir a un artista/grupo a nivel musical es difícil, y un poco rollo además porque nunca soléis estar de acuerdo con las etiquetas que se os ponen. Para nosotras, Autumn Comets es, básicamente, Post Rock. ¿Estáis de acuerdo? ¿Cómo definiríais vosotros la música de Autumn Comets?

Es complicado. Si dices post-rock piensas en canciones de 7 minutos, instrumentales, con constante subida y bajada. Y tenemos canciones largas, con mucho peso instrumental y con subidas y bajadas de intensidad, pero no del modo en el que podría moverse un grupo puramente de post-rock. Podría ser post-rock llevado a un extremo, al extremo menos post-rock. Lo que sí nos gusta y además pasa con cierta frecuencia es que nos dicen que sonamos a algo muy personal y difícilmente “encajable” en algún estilo. Para nosotros tener ese sonido personal es muy importante.

Vuestro género tiene muchos fans en España, pero no muchos artistas. Nombradnos, si podéis, a 3 ó 4 bandas o artistas españoles con los que os podáis sentir identificados musicalmente.

Sin ser específicamente de nuestro estilo sí nos sentimos muy afines a Incendios (Atención Tsunami), Kermit (con los que hemos girado hace poco), Allfits, Cuchillo, Toundra, segunda apnea…

Colaborasteis con Lourdes Hernández (Russian Red). Pregunta obligada, y toca mojarse: ¿Es tan repipi como parece? (No os preocupéis, que no nos lee).

¡Pues igual sí que nos lee! Nos lea o no, hay que decir la verdad, y no, no lo es. No entendemos tanta ‘’crítica’’ a alguien que con nosotros se ha portado tan bien, que está donde está porque se lo ha ganado y que, realmente, es tan buena persona como ella.

Otra colaboración de lujo que habéis hecho, es con el Sr. Micah P. Hinson, al que además acompañasteis en alguna actuación en nuestro País. ¿Cómo conseguisteis la colaboración? ¿Qué habéis aprendido de la experiencia?

Ambas colaboraciones fueron  en el disco anterior ya, la verdad es que casi costaba recordarlo. Manu coincidió con él girando y grabó con él las cuerdas de su penúltimo disco, tras eso le pasamos un par de canciones y colaboró en la que se sintió más cómodo. Mucha emoción al escucharlo, la verdad.

¿A quién lanzaríais un par de bragas/calzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué?

 Al bajista de Cómo vivir en el Campo, que resulta que es el mismo que el nuestro.

Recomendadnos un disco cada uno, para comprar en el 2013. (Aparte del vuestro).

¿Por qué mola más vuestra versión de Paper Planes de M.I.A. que la propia original? ¿Por qué?

Habría que preguntarle a ella qué opina, uf. Dudamos que sea mejor, es complicado mejorar semejante hitazo… Gracias por la parte que nos toca de todos modos, para nosotros se trataba de adaptar un hitazo a ese sonido personal que os contábamos más arriba.

Uh Huh Her: girls rule

Today in the hysterical interview we have Camilla Grey and Leisha Hailey, both Uh Huh Her, a girls duet that blends indie, electro, new wave and pop in a synergistic combination.

First of all, this is not a PJ Harvey tribute band. They have just released their 3 EP “Debris 3EP”. There is something special in their songs, mystical, organic chemistry and female character, key elements of the band.

This is the way they are, Uh Huh Her.

Two LP: Common Reaction, Nocturnes and now Debris 3EP, a new EP in which you have released songs of your previous work but in a new production; is this because you weren’t happy at all with the first production of the songs?

We released it because we wanted to do pare down, acoustic versions of songs our fans know and love.  We love the old production, but wanted to change it up to give our fans something different while we work on our next album.

We know that the process of recording the second album wasn’t easy. How is going to be the process of recording the third LP? When is going to be out?

Because we’re an indie band financed by ourselves and sometimes our fans, it´s sometimes difficult to deduce when releases will come out simply because we don’t have the resources to put music out in a fast way.  When you have a label there are strict release schedule and lots of people helping you along the way to get your music out.  We don’t have that, so we are not sure when it will be out.   We just started working on the new record, and hopefully expect a summer release. 

Tell us about “Teleuhhvision” Why this channel? Is this special made for Uh Huh Her hysterical fans all over the five continents?

We wanted our fans to have a glimpse into our daily lives as well as show them old tour videos etc.  We thought it would be a nice way to help promote new releases and keep in touch with our fans in the meantime.

You can’t deny that you girls have a lot of fun when you are touring … it must be a unique experience to integrate personal experience, music, the people that go to see you….but we suppose that it isn’t always fun. Any bad or annoying experience you’d like to share with us?

When people can’t differentiate Leisha from Alice is always a funny problem.  I’ve only ever been a musician, so when people don’t come and respect the music and scream “Alice” the entire set that can be very frustrating. 

At who would you throw a Hello Kitty knickers?

Not sure we understand the question, but we would put hello kitty knickers our dogs.  That would be cute. 

You girls have sold some objects on Ebay. A fair and sustainable way to get founds for producing the album. The last auction was held this week: The fans had the opportunity to bid for some guitars, pedals, and other objects of the band… But which was the most extravagant object you sold on this auction? Did you sell everything?

The most extravagant thing we did was have dinner with a fan.  It actually was a great experience because she was super cool and fun to talk to. 

During the European tour you had played in such devoted indie clubs as the Magnet Club of Berlin, Paradiso club in Amsterdam, and others … What about the host and the people in Europe?

We love touring in Europe.  We love the people’s energy and excitement for music there.   It’s very different from touring in the U.S.  The clubs are beautiful and full of history there.  We always look forward to touring in Europe.  We wish we could do it more often.

This year 2013, Will it be at last the year that Uh Huh Her plays in Spain?

We hope to play there!  Unfortunately we missed an opportunity to play in Barcelona, but we hope to be able to come back to finally play for our Spanish Fans.  Camila used to live in Spain and studied at the University of Salamanca, and would love to return to play there. 

Imagine yourself in this scenario of an apocalyptic world: You are in a world of zombies, you've survived a biological attack with a mysterious zombie virus. This infection is lasting the human. You both armed to the teeth as the protagonist of Resident Evil are the only people not infected with the virus. Your mission is to stay alive as long as possible and look for other uninfected alive people. One day you come across a girl about to be devoured by a group of zombies scouts. You go to help her. When you are about to save the girl you realize that she is ... Lana del Rey!

What would you do:

A) You say sorry you can’t save her because you are running out of bullets for the next ten years.

B) You save her with the condition that Lana assumes that singing and playing an instrument at a time is possible.

Hmmmm, not very familiar with Lana Del Rey or her music, so I would have to say A.

Uh Huh Her: las chicas son guerreras

Hoy en la entrevista histérica tenemos a Camila Grey y Leisha Hailey, o lo que es lo mismo, Uh Huh Her, un dueto de chicas que aúna lo indie, electro, new wave y pop en una combinación sinérgica.

Que os quede claro que no son ninguna banda tributo a PJ Harvey. Acaban de sacar su tercer EP “Debris 3EP”. Hay misticismo, química orgánica, pero sobretodo carácter femenino en sus canciones, elementos clave de esta banda.  Así son Uh Huh Her.  

Dos álbumes de larga duración: Common Reaction, Nocturnes, y el recientemente Debris EP3, un nuevo EP en el que se reeditan algunas canciones de vuestros anteriores trabajos. ¿Es porque no estabais del todo satisfechas con la edición inicial?

Lo hicimos porque queríamos simplificar, hacer versiones acústicas de las canciones que nuestros fans conocen y adoran. Nos encanta la antigua producción, pero queríamos cambiarla para dar a nuestros fans algo distinto mientras trabajábamos con nuestro siguiente álbum.

Sabemos que no fue tarea fácil producir el segundo álbum. ¿Cómo estáis llevando el proceso de grabación del tercer LP? ¿Tenéis una fecha marcada para el lanzamiento?

Como somos un grupo indie financiado por nosotras mismas y a veces por nuestros fans, suele ser difícil saber cuándo los discos salen a la venta, básicamente porque no tenemos los medios para sacar adelante la música de un modo rápido. Cuando  trabajas con una discográfica hay un control estricto en el calendario de grabación y mucha gente ayudándote en el camino a que tu música salga a flote. Nosotras no contamos con esto, así que no estamos seguras de saber cuándo se publicará. Acabamos de empezar a trabajar en el nuevo disco, y con suerte esperamos que salga para verano.

Habladnos de “Teleuhhvision”  ¿Por qué nace este canal? ¿Es una respuesta a vuestras fans histéricas repartidas por los cinco continentes? 

Queríamos que nuestros fans se zambulleran en nuestra vida diaria así como enseñarles giras antiguas, etc. Creímos que sería una buena manera de promocionar los nuevos lanzamientos y mantener el contacto con los fans mientras tanto.

No nos negareis que os lo pasáis genial mientras estáis de gira … Tiene que ser una experiencia única y especial integrar lo personal, lo musical y la gente que va a veros, aunque suponemos que no siempre deben ser todo risas. ¿Alguna  anécdota que os haya tocado los webs un rato?

Cuando la gente no sabe diferencias a Leisha de Alice es un problema siempre divertido. Yo sólo he trabajado como músico, así que cuando la gente no respeta la música y grita “Alice” en medio de un concierto, puede ser muy frustrante.

¿A quién lanzaríais un par de bragas de Hello Kitty?

No estamos seguras de haber entendido la pregunta, pero pondríamos unos calzoncillos de Hello Kitty a nuestros perros. Quedaría mono.

Habéis sacado objetos vuestros a subasta por Ebay en varias ocasiones. Una manera limpia y sostenible de obtener fondos para financiar vuestros álbumes,  la última subasta ha sido esta misma semana. Los fans podían pujar por guitarras de la banda, pedales, entre otros objetos…. Pero, ¿Qué es lo más extravagante que ha salido a subasta? ¿Se vendió todo?

Lo más extravagante que hicimos fue cenar con un fan. Fue una experiencia genial porque fue muy animado y divertido hablar con él y todo eso.

Habéis tocado en clubes indies consagrados como el Magnet Club de Berlín, el Paradiso de Amsterdam, entre otros… ¿Qué tal la acogida del público europeo?

Nos encanta hacer gira en Europa. Nos encanta la energía de la gente y cómo viven la música. Es muy diferente a hacer gira por USA. Los clubs son preciosos y están llenos de historia. Siempre estamos intentando actúar por Europa y ojalá pudiéramos hacerlo más a menudo.

Este año 2013 ¿Será por fin el año en que Uh Huh Her toque en España?

¡Esperamos actuar allí! Por desgracia, perdimos una oportunidad de tocar en Barcelona, pero esperamos poder volver para tocar para nuestros fans en España. Camila vivió en España y estudió en la Universidad de Salamanca, así que le encantaría volver para actuar allí.

Vuestra misión es la de manteneros con vida el tiempo máximo posible y buscar otras personas no infectadas . Un día os encontráis con una persona a punto de ser devorada por un grupo de zombies Boy Scouts. Acudís en su ayuda. Cuando estáis a punto de salvarla os dais cuenta de que se trata ni más ni menos que de...  ¡Lana del Rey!

 Que haríais:

A)      Le decís que no la podéis salvar porque lleváis la munición justa para los próximos diez años.

B)      La salváis con la condición de que asuma que cantar y tocar un instrumento a la vez es posible.

 Hmmmm, no estamos muy familiarizadas con Lana del Rey y su música así que diríamos A.

Bury Me A Lion, originary from New York City, are a good example of the several influences that may have a band components, when combined, they can be amazing musical cocktails. If we put some Brit Pop, Soul, Rock n 'Roll, Blues and Reggae in a jar and shake it, get a powerful shot of Bury Me a Lion direct to all your senses that will make you dance without the unwelcome effects of Jägermeister on the day after.

Your self-titled EP was released in 2009 and three years later, in 2012, you published the LP "Year of the Lion". Tell us what do you feel about the public in the nearly year is out the LP.

Jarett: We are very proud of all our music, recorded and unrecorded. We have had some great opportunities recently to continue to expose our music to new listeners and create new fans. As Sam would say, “When people hear us, they like us.” I think we have written some great, accessible rock music that bucks the trend.

Sam: It’s really rewarding to reflect on how far we’ve come in the three years between releases. We’ve grown in every possible way (live show, fan base, hability) and we keep pushing the envelope, every minute of every day. Our fans have grown with us as well, and we can’t wait to show them what we have in store for 2013. 

Do you expect that 2013 is the year of the Lion and you’ll definitely make the breakthrough?

Jarett: When we released ‘Year of the Lion’ in 2012, it was done tongue-in-cheek. But, we did gain some incredible momentum and achieve some great benchmarks – this is the year we build on that success. 2013 is the breakthrough year; 2013 is the Year of the Lion.

Sam: We’ve always been aware of our potential, and 2013 will hopefully be the year we capitalize on everything we’ve built since day 1. We’re at the point now where it’s not necessarily ‘how,’ but ‘when’ will we breakthrough to a larger audience. Maybe it will even happen before I finish writing this sentence…

Yuri: No, there are no certainties in the music business. We hope that through more exposure more people will want to embrace our music, and want to hear more of us. It's really up to the fans!

Jarett we have read that as a singer you feel particularly inspired by the way Jim Morrison sung. Is there any other singer you feel some kind of hysterical fascination?

Jarett: Yeah, Morrison had a style that was almost violently expressive at times. He would act as a conduit of the music and the lyrics. I am just as fascinated by the styles of Freddie Mercury - who was a true showman - and Scott Weiland and John Joseph, both of whom have truly kinetic presences on stage. In practice, I tend towards the delivery of Morrissey, who moves around the stage with a slight theatrical interpretation of his lyrics.

As we have mentioned, your musical influences are very varied. Can you tell us which styles do you like at most?

Sam: I’ve been asked this question a lot recently, and my answer generally changes from interview to interview. Right now, because it’s winter, I’m listening to a lot of Marvin Gaye, Vince Guaraldi Trio, and calmer Indie (Beach House, Twin Shadow, Grizzly Bear). I know that doesn’t exactly spell “Bury Me A Lion,” but it does help get the creative juices flowing in different directions. 

Jarett:  Since Sam and I have been writing together, I’ve tended towards folk-indie or country influences in the winter. (Listen to First Aid Kit. They are amazing!) This winter, though, I’m still on this kick from the autumn – The Black Keys, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers, the New York Dolls, Stephen Malkmus. We are constantly adding ingredients to the Jägermeister that is Bury Me A Lion.

You have already performed in several festivals. What you consider are the pros and cons of acting at a festival?

Jarett: Number one con – while you’re playing, there is guaranteed to be another great artist or artists playing on another stage or at another venue. You can’t escape it! 

Sam: I love the room to work on a larger stage. I have a slight case of claustrophobia, so it really helps my psyche when I can step three steps in either direction without smacking Jarett with my guitar. 

Yuri: Festivals can be pretty varied, so it really depends on the festival. The best part of festivals is playing to a new crowd, meeting other, artists, and listening to the other bands. We're all huge fans of different musicians ourselves so often there are acts we want to see. There’s not really a downside to playing at a festival. Maybe only that ticket prices are higher due to other bands, which prevents some of our fans from coming. However, we want to get as much exposure as possible for our music so playing for new fans is very important to us.

Who will you throw a Hello Kitty knickers or underpants and why? 

Jarett: First of all, I prefer Chococat! Secondly – I would get thousands of Chococat underwear and launch them at all our fans! As for other musicians – it’s got to be Katy Perry!

Sam: I think One Direction would most benefit from ladies’ small Hello Kitty underpants. I can’t think of another current band that could possibly fit into them. 

We could say that your style is the Rock and Roll. How would you describe you in one sentence your style?

Sam: Jagged edged explosion of creation with a dash of confidence and strength. 

Yuri:  It's a combination of classic rock with modern elements and styles.

Have you had a relative who was a lion tamer or maybe some of you in a previous life were? Why this name?

Sam: My great uncle, François Valdez de Einhorn von Carmelo, was the star lion tamer in Caribbean in the 18th century. Chimera, his star lion, tragically bit him after an accidental “attack” command. He buried the lion and vowed to never lion tame again. He passed along this legacy to us. 

Which is your favorite song of the LP and why? 

Jarett: They’re all great. Hmmm…I’m definitely a fan of our classic track, “One Arm For Another,” which we closed our set with at Catalpa NYC last June:

Sam:  “Be Your Own Bomb” is probably the best encapsulation of our sound. We've just released a professional music video:  

Yuri:  Definitely excited for the “Be Your Own Bomb” video, and we had a blast putting together a video for another single on the album, “Blurred”.

Bury me a Lion, originarios de Nueva York, son un buen ejemplo de que las diversas influencias que puedan tener los componentes de una banda, si se combinan bien, pueden resultar un cóctel musical alucinante. Si metemos Brit Pop, Soul, Rock n’ Roll, Blues y Reggae en un bote y lo agitamos, sale un poderoso chupito de Bury Me a Lion que irá directo a todos tus sentidos y que te hará bailar sin los inoportunos efectos del Jägermeister en el día después.

Vuestro EP homónimo salió en 2009 y tres años después, en 2012, publicasteis el LP “Year of the Lion”. Contadnos qué sensaciones tenéis respecto al público en el casi año que lleva el disco en la calle.

Jarett: Estamos muy orgullosos de toda nuestra música, registrada y no registrada. Hemos tenido algunas grandes oportunidades últimamente para seguir exponiendo nuestra música a nuevos oyentes y crear nuevos fans. Como Sam diría: "Cuando la gente nos escucha, les gusta". Creo que hemos escrito buena música, rock accesible que rompe con la tendencia.

Sam: Es muy gratificante reflexionar sobre lo lejos que hemos llegado en los últimos tres años entre una cosa y otra. Hemos crecido en todos los sentidos posibles (shows en vivo, número de fans, capacidades propias) y seguimos intentando crecer, cada minuto de cada día. Nuestros fans han crecido con nosotros también, y no podemos esperar para enseñarles lo que tenemos preparado para 2013.

¿Esperáis que el 2013 sea vuestro año del león y despuntar definitivamente?

Jarett: Cuando lanzamos 'Year of the Lion' en 2012, se hizo de manera irónica  Sin embargo, hemos tenido un impulso increíble y hemos conseguido ser referencia de otros.  Este es el año en el que hay que aprovechar ese éxito. 2013 es el año decisivo, 2013 es el año del León.

Sam: Siempre hemos sido conscientes de nuestro potencial, y el 2013 se espera que sea el año en que aprovechemos todo lo que hemos construido desde nuestro día 1. Estamos en el punto en el que no es necesariamente el "cómo", sino el "cuando" lo haremos llegar a un público más amplio. Tal vez incluso pueda llegar a pasar antes de que termine de escribir esta frase ...

Yuri: No, no hay certezas en el negocio de la música. Esperamos que a través de una mayor exposición, más personas quieran abrazar nuestra música y quieran saber más de nosotros. ¡Eso realmente depende de los fans!

Jarett, hemos leído que como cantante te sientes especialmente inspirado por la forma de cantar de Jim Morrison. ¿Hay algún otro cantante por el que sientas algún tipo de fascinación histérica?

Jarett: Sí, Morrison tenía un estilo que era casi violentamente expresivo a veces. Actuaba como un conductor de la letra y la música. Estoy fascinado por el estilo de Freddie Mercury - que era un verdadero showman - y Scott Weiland y Joseph John, que tienen una presencia verdaderamente cinética en el escenario. En la práctica, me inclino por la entrega de Morrissey, que se mueve por el escenario con una ligera interpretación teatral de sus letras.

Como hemos dicho, a nivel musical vuestras influencias son variadísimas. ¿Nos contáis brevemente qué estilos os apasionan a cada uno?

Sam: Me hacen esta pregunta mucho últimamente, y mi respuesta suele cambiar de entrevista en entrevista. En este momento, porque es invierno, estoy escuchando un montón a Marvin Gaye, Trio Vince Guaraldi, y un indie más relajado (Beach House, Twin Shadow, Grizzly Bear). Sé que no es la definición de  Bury Me A Lion, pero sí ayuda a obtener la esencia creativa que después fluye en direcciones diferentes.

Jarett: Desde que Sam y yo escribimos juntos, he tenido influencias como el indie folk o el country en invierno (¡escuchad First Aid Kid, son increíbles!). Este invierno, sin embargo, todavía estoy arrastrando la música del otoño - The Black Keys, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, The New York Dolls, Stephen Malkmus...- Estamos constantemente añadiendo ingredientes a la Jägermeister de Bury Me A Lion.

Habéis actuado ya en varios festivales. ¿Cuáles consideráis que son los pros y contras de actuar en un festival?

Jarett: Contra número uno: Mientras estás actuando, puede que otro gran artista o artistas estén actuando en otros escenarios. ¡No se puede escapar de eso!

Sam: Me encanta el espacio que se tiene al actuar en un escenario más grande. Tengo un leve problema de claustrofobia, así que realmente ayuda a mi psique cuando puedo dar tres pasos en cualquier dirección sin que se choque Jarett con mi guitarra.

Yuri: Los festivales suelen ser bastante variados, por lo que realmente depende del festival. La mejor parte de los festivales es actuar ante un público nuevo, conocer a otros artistas, y escuchar a las otras bandas. Todos somos grandes fans de diferentes músicos así que con frecuencia hay conciertos que queremos ver. No hay realmente una desventaja clara al actuar en un festival. Tal vez sólo que los precios de los abonos son más altos debido a otras bandas, lo que evita que algunos de nuestros fans puedan venir. Sin embargo, queremos conseguir expandirnos tanto como sea posible, así que tocar nuestra música para fans nuevos es muy importante para nosotros.

¿A quién lanzaríais un par de bragas o calzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué?

Jarett: ¡En primer lugar, prefiero "Chococat"! En segundo lugar, ¡Conseguiria miles de calzoncillos Chococat y los lanzaría a todos nuestros fans! En cuanto a otros músicos...  ¡Tiene que ser Katy Perry!

Sam: Creo que One Direction se beneficiaría más de las braguitas de Hello Kitty. No puedo pensar en otra banda actual que entre en ellas.

Podríamos decir que vuestro estilo, a nivel general, es el Rock and Roll. ¿Cómo definiríais vosotros en una frase vuestro estilo?

Sam: Una explosión de creación con un toque de confianza y fuerza.

Yuri: Es una combinación de rock clásico con elementos modernos y distintos estilos.

¿Habéis tenido algún familiar que haya sido domador de leones o tal vez alguno de vosotros en una vida anterior haya sido? ¿Por qué este nombre?

Sam: Mi tío abuelo, François Valdez de Einhorn Von Carmelo, era el domador de leones más famoso del Caribe en el Siglo 18. Quimera, su león estrella, trágicamente le mordió después de un "ataque" accidental. Enterró el león y se comprometió a nunca domar leones de nuevo. Es el legado que nos ha dejado.

¿Sois más de tomar unas copas con amigos charlando y volver pronto a casa, o de salir a bailar y terminar dos días después, sin ropa, en medio de una carretera secundaria haciendo auto-stop?

Jarett: Soy más propenso a salir con amigos, ir a casa temprano, y después ser arrastrado a salir nuevamente desnudo, a la calle con mis amigos, que odian que me vaya a casa temprano.

Sam: Todo lo anterior, todo el rato desnudo. La ropa es para las personas que carecen de confianza.

Yuri: Prefiero charlar un poco, después beber con los amigos y después lo de la desnudez.

¿Cuál es vuestra canción favorita del disco y por qué?

Jarett: Son todas muy buenas. Hmmm ... Definitivamente soy fan de nuestra clásica canción, "One Arm for Another", con la que cerramos nuestra actuación en Catalpa en Nueva York el Junio pasado:

Yuri: Sin duda estoy emocionado por el video "Be Your Own Bomb", y también nos lo pasamos genial preparando el vídeo para otro single del álbum, "Borrosa".
