San Cisco are Jordi, Josh, Nick and Scarlett. San Cisco is indie pop with hints, direct
lyrics and very catchy rhythms. They have been awarded Itunes Best Breakthrough
Artist of the year 2012 in their country. If you do not know them, make haste
to catch up, because this year everybody will talk about them. Here it is their hysteric interview.
San Cisco was released
in November 2012, but you were 3 years playing and also editing EPs since 2011.
Why has been such a long time until the first LP?
It didn't feel like a long time in the lead up
to releasing the LP because were still busy finding our feet as a band, working
on our sound and building a fan base. The EPs were a good way for us to be able
to explore different genres and figure out what we wanted to portray and create
in our first album.
Question for Scarlett: Scarlett, you're the
drummer; you also sing and do the
chorus. Does that came as natural as you compose the songs or was it
premeditated to give a touch of originality to the band?
Me singing is something that usually comes
about in the studio rather than in rehearsals… But it varies from song to song.
In Awkward it was a last minute thing for me to sing but in Beach, Josh wrote
the chorus with female vocals in mind. I think the interplay between male and
female vocals in a way has helped set us apart from other bands.
Who would you throw a
Hello Kitty knickers/underwear and why? (This is a question we always do, is
the hysterical way to show you really admire a band, artist, person…
I would throw my Hello Kitty Knickers at David
Bowie because he is an amazing artist and performer and was ahead of his time
in so many ways, as a musican, writer, producer and fashion icon.
In your Facebook we
can read " Don't let their youthful looks fool you: San Cisco are one
seriously well- experienced band ". Have you found that you sometimes have
been prejudged because of your age or your appearance as people saying
"Look! A teenage pop group!”.
We get 'cute' and 'hipster' a lot which is
annoying! I don't think our age is a big deal anymore.. Jordi is technically
the only teenager in the band and lots of great bands started out when they
were young so it shouldn't be surprising that we can play at our age.
Are you coming to any
Spanish festival in 2013?
Hopefully! We'll see.
We finish the
interview with the awesome song “Awkward”. Has someone of you felt harassed as
the song explains?
I think Jordi has been harassed a bit on
Snapchat but the song is mostly fictional.

letras directas y melodías muy pegadizas. Han sido galardonados con el premio
ITunes como mejor debut – Artista 2012 de su país. Si no los conoces, date
prisa, porque este año todo el mundo hablará de ellos. Esta es su entrevista
histérica.
Publicasteis San Cisco en Noviembre del 2012 pero
llevabais ya 3 años tocando y con EP´s editados desde el año 2011. ¿Por qué
esperasteis tanto para sacar vuestro primer larga duración?
No siento como si
hubiera pasado mucho tiempo hasta la realización del LP porque anteriormente estábamos ocupados
buscando nuestro lugar como banda, trabajando en nuestro sonido y cimentando la
base de fans. Los EP’s fueron una buena manera para nosotros de ser capaces de
explorar diferentes géneros y de
imaginar lo que queríamos retratar y crear en nuestro primer álbum.
Pregunta para Scarlett: Scarlett, eres la baterista del
grupo y, además, cantas y haces coros. ¿Esto surgió como algo natural a medida
que se componen las canciones o fue algo premeditado para dar un toque de
originalidad a la banda?
El hecho de que yo
cante es algo que usualmente surge más en el estudio que en los ensayos… Pero
varía de canción a canción. En Awkward fue en el último minuto lo de que
cantara pero en Beach, Josh escribió los coros ya con coros femeninos en mente.
Creo que el juego entre hombre y mujer en las voces nos ha podido ayudar de
algún modo a diferenciarnos de otras bandas.
¿A quién lanzaríais un par de bragas o calzoncillos de
Hello Kitty y por qué?
Lanzaría mis bragas
de Hello Kitty a David Bowie porque creo que es un artista y performer
alucinante y estaba adelantado a su tiempo en tantas cosas, como músico,
escritor, productor e icono de la moda.
En vuestro Facebook
podemos leer “Don't let their youthful looks fool you: San Cisco are one
seriously well- experienced band”. (No dejéis que su
juventud os engañe: San Cisco es una banda con mucha experiencia). ¿Os habéis encontrado en ocasiones que os han
prejuzgado por vuestra edad o vuestra apariencia en plan “anda mira, un grupo
de pop adolescente”.
Somos “monos” y “hipster” ¡Y nos molesta! No
creo que nuestra edad sea motivo de comentario nunca más.
Jordi es
técnicamente el único adolescente en la banda y un montón de bandas geniales
empezaron cuando eran jóvenes así que no debería sorprender que podamos tocar a
nuestra edad.
¿Tenéis previsto tocar en algún festival español durante
el 2013?
¡ Eso esperamos! Ya se verá.
Terminamos la entrevista con el temazo “Awkward”. ¿Alguno
de vosotros se sintió acosado por alguien tal y como explica la canción?
Creo que Jordi fue
acosado en un chat, pero la canción es básicamente ficticia.

It’s not surprising that it’s the country with the biggest production of maple syrup, but also, it’s not surprising the quality of its indie bands.Don’t be foolish because of her 22 years-old: Mo Kenney has shocked us since the first until the last song of her homonymous album. Mature songs and a unique style: Indie Folk-Rock from Halifax (New Scotland). The cool Mo Kenney.
When did you begin to compose with the guitar?
I started playing guitar when I was 11 years old. I didn't begin to write songs on the guitar until I was about 15!
What kind of guitar/s do you use? Some kind of special acoustic guitar, maybe?
I play a Hensel Parlor acoustic guitar. It was made in Canada by a man whose name was Arthur Hensel around 1930. I also have a Gibson Les Paul electric that I don't use as often, a Seagull acoustic and a Godin electric guitar.
Your debut album is formed by 10 songs. It’s that a resume of the 10 commandments of your life?
My album is basically a collection of songs I have written from the age of 16 to the present. I had written quite a few songs in that time so I picked the best ones for the record.
The album has been produced by the prestigious Label from Toronto “Pheromone Recordings” in collaboration with Joel Plaskett, a renamed indie artist and “New Scotland Records”. An album that has been two years until the publication, so it’s obvious that all of you have been very careful with the debut LP… Did you enjoy recording with such a good company as this?
Joel and I began working on my album in April of 2011. We were able to take our time on it because we were working around each other's schedule's. The recording process was amazing for me because until then I hadn't been able to record in a legitimate studio. It was amazing to hear my songs after they'd been recorded because the quality is so professional. It was a very exciting process for me!
What did mean for you to collaborate with Joel?
It was an awesome experience being able to collaborate with Joel. I've been a fan of his music since I was a teenager so it was incredible to work with him. I found it easy working with him as a producer because we both had the same vision for the album. It was great having his experience because he really knew how to get the sounds I was looking for. I learned a lot during our studio sessions.
Which one of these two collaborations will you choose in an hypothetic case (even one of them is a fiction character): Choose an Anne Shirley poem and make a song about it or make a duet with Shania Twain?
Haha it would be funny to make a duet with Shania Twain so I guess I'd have to choose her. My mom would be very happy.
At Who will you throw a Hello Kitty Knickers or underpants and why?
If I could throw my underpants at anyone it would have been Elliott Smith! Unfortunately he's no longer among the living, so that will never happen. I guess Sigur Ros will be the lucky band instead.
Can we expect a Tour outside America nearly? Europe, maybe?
I would love to tour Europe! I'm hoping music will bring me to many different parts of the world to play, it's just a matter of time!
To listen to your music is better if you do it drinking something: beer, wine, maple syrup…?
It's best to listen to my music after drinking a mixture of bacon, maple syrup and canadian beer. Only then will you get the full effect.
How many times have you been left looking like a “sucker”?
I've only been left looking like a "sucker" once, so I wrote a song about it.

No
nos sorprende que este sea el país que más sirope de arce produzca, ni tampoco que
sea del que salgan tan buenas bandas indies. Que
sus 22 años no te engañen: Mo Kenney nos ha enganchado desde la primera canción
hasta la última de su álbum debut homónimo. Canciones maduras y un estilo
autentico: Indie folk-rock de Halifax (Nueva Escocia). Mo

¿Cuándo empezaste a componer con la guitarra?
Empecé a tocar la guitarra cuando tenía 11 años. No
empecé a componer canciones con la guitarra hasta que tenía 15!
¿Qué clase de guitarra/s utilizas? ¿Es algún tipo de
acústica especial?
Toco una guitarra acústica Hensel Parlor. Se hizo en
Canadá a manos de un hombre llamado Arthur Hensel alrededor de 1930. También
tengo una Gibson Les Paul eléctrica que no utilizo tanto, una Seagull acústica
y una guitarra eléctrica Godin.
Tu álbum debut se compone de diez canciones. ¿Es un resumen
de los diez mandamientos en tu vida?
Mi álbum es básicamente una colección de canciones que he
ido escribiendo desde los 16 años hasta ahora. He escrito unas cuantas
canciones en este tiempo así que escogí las mejores para el disco.
El álbum está producido por la prestigiosa discográfica
de Toronto “Pheromone Recordings” en colaboración con Joel Plaskett, conocido
artista indie, y “New Scotland Records”. Es un disco que ha tardado casi dos
años es gestarse, así que habéis puesto mucho mimo en el debut está claro… Se
ha hecho esperar. ¿Lo has pasado bien grabando con tan buena compañía?
Joel y yo empezamos a trabajar en mi álbum en Abril del
2011. Pudimos tomarnos nuestro tiempo porque nos adaptábamos según nuestros horarios.
El proceso de grabación fue genial para mí porque no había grabado en un
estudio real hasta el momento. Fue genial escuchar las canciones después de
grabadas porque la calidad es tan profesional. Fue un proceso excitante para
mí!
¿Qué ha significado para ti poder colaborar con
Joel?
Fue una experiencia fabulosa el poder colaborar con Joel.
He sido fan de su música desde que era adolescente así que para mí fue
increíble poder trabajar con él. Encontré que es fácil trabajar con él como
productor ya que ambos teníamos la misma visión del álbum. Fue genial poder
contar con su experiencia ya que realmente sabía cómo obtener los sonidos que
yo estaba buscando. Aprendí un montón durante nuestras sesiones de estudio.
¿Cuál de estas dos colaboraciones escogerías para una
futura colaboración aunque uno de los personajes sea de ficción?: ¿Escoger un
poema de Anne Shirley e interpretarlo en una canción o hacer un dueto con
Shania Twain?
Jaja sería divertido hacer un dúo con Shania Twain así
que la elegiría a ella. Mi madre estaría muy contenta.
¿A quién lanzarías unas bragas/calzoncillos de Hello
Kitty y por qué?
Si pudiera lanzar mis calzoncillos a alguien sería a
Ellioth Smith! Por desgracia él ya no vive, así que eso no será posible.
Supongo que Sigur Rós serían los afortunados en su lugar.
¿Tienes previsto hacer próximamente gira fuera de
América? ¿Europa tal vez?
Me encantaría hacer gira por Europa! Espero que la música
me dé la oportunidad de ir a diferentes partes del mundo para tocar, es
cuestión de tiempo!
Para escuchar tu música, ¿Mejor con cerveza, vino, sirope
de arce…?
Es mejor escuchar mi música después de beberte una mezcla
de bacon, sirope de arce y cerveza canadiense. Sólo entonces pillas el efecto
completo.
¿Cuántas veces se te ha quedado cara de “sucker”?
Sólo una vez se me quedó cara de “sucker”, por eso
escribí la canción.
Hoy en la

nacional. Este
atípico trío barcelonés, crea sonidos que se unen en atmósferas que se propagan
radialmente como la aurora boreal. Vale, no

Post rock
electrónico, electro-ambient-experimental, electrónica instrumental... ¿Cómo
definimos vuestra música?
Las etiquetas siempre son difíciles de poner, pero creo que en ese sentido lo habéis hecho mejor que nosotros! En realidad preferimos ver que dicen los demás a tener que mojarnos. A veces es muy divertido porque hay gente que llega a decir cosas que nunca habíamos pensado (¿dream pop?), o comparaciones con grupos que ni siquiera conocemos.
Electronic
post rock, electro ambient-experimental, instrumental electronic… How can we
define your music?
Tags are always
difficult, but I think that you have done it better than us! Actually, we prefer
to wait and see what people say and think about our music. Sometimes it’s really
funny because people say things that could never imagine (dream pop?), or
compares us to bands that we don´t even know.
Habéis
publicado Rome, un EP de nueve canciones con el sello Irregular. Suponemos que
"parir" un disco debe ser una liberación y algo muy satisfactorio.
¿Qué se esconde detrás del nacimiento de Rome? ¿Cómo ha sido el proceso de
crear la banda, definir el estilo y componer los temas?
Rome no lo sacamos con Irregular, fue una demo que grabamos en casa -compartimos piso los tres- y un día decidimos colgarla en bandcamp como EP, con portada de nuestro amigo Joan Bennassar, que es un artista increíble. No lo concebimos como un disco, eran canciones que habíamos hecho para pasar el tiempo y aunque eran nueve decidimos que sería un EP. Se podría decir que Rome es producto de nuestra convivencia. Y fue lo que nos llevó a sacar el Grecia EP con Irregular.
You have
published Rome, a 9 songs EP with Irregular Label. We guess that, to make an
album must be like a great liberation and very satisfactory. What hides behind
the birth of Rome? Which has been the process of creating the band, defining
the style and compose the music?
We didn´t
publish Rome with Irregular, it was a demo that we recorded at home – the three
of us are flat mates- and one day we decided to upload it in bandcamp as an EP,
with the cover of our friend Joan Bennassar, an incredible artist. We didn’t
conceive it as an album, they were just songs that we made just to have fun and
even they were nine songs, we decided to record them as an EP. So we can say
Rome is product of our action. And that’s what made us to release Grecia EP
with Irregular.
Vosotros
no sois un grupo al uso, en el sentido de que no hay instrumentos clásicos de
los que se ven en las formaciones Pop o Rock de toda la vida. Sin embargo, el
sonido y la calidad de la escucha de vuestros temas es brutal. ¿Sois Juan
Palomo, yo me lo guiso, yo me lo como a la hora de editar, programar,
masterizar y todas esas cosas que acaban en -ar? ¿Con qué apoyos habéis
contado?
Siempre es bueno tener muchos puntos de vista sobre el trabajo. El Grecia EP lo hicimos con Jano (Monki Valley) y Vicente. Ahora el disco lo estamos grabando con Charlie, Iván, y Alex de Lasers, en su estudio Newton Audio. También contamos con el apoyo de nuestros amigos que nos dan su opinión sobre los temas y la gente de Irregular Label.
You are
not a traditional band, as well as you don’t use traditional instruments that
we are used to see in Pop or Rock bands, though, the sound and quality of
listening to your songs is awesome. Are you “self-made-guys” when you edit,
program, master, etc.? Have you counted on someone’s collaboration?
It’s
always good to have different points of view of the work. We did Grecia EP with
Jano (Monki Valley) and Vicente. Now we are recording the album with Charlie,
Iván, and Alex from Lasers, in their studio Newton Audio. We also have the
support of our friends, which give us their opinions, and Irregular Label
people.
El primer
videoclip que Boreals, ha sido exitosamente financiado a través de la
iniciativa de Crowdfunding que hicisteis rodar en las redes sociales. ¿Cómo fue
la experiencia?
Bueno detrás de cualquier proyecto de crowdfunding siempre está esa ansiedad por llegar al objetivo de recaudación, e intentar que las recompensas a los mecenas sean atractivas. Por suerte lo conseguimos, y fue una buena experiencia porque no podíamos financiarlo por nuestra cuenta. Pero de cara a futuros videos intentaremos hacerlo de forma más convencional y concentrarnos más en el vídeo que en cómo financiarlo.
Your
first video has been successfully sponsored along the crowdfunding idea that
you made popular in social media. How was the experience?
Well, behind
every crowdfunding project there is always the anxious of arriving to the
collection goal, and try to make attractive the rewards to our patrons.
Fortunately we did it, and it was a good experience because we couldn’t collect
it by ourselves. But facing our next videos, we will try to make it more
conventionally and focus more on the video than on the way to collect the money
for it.
Como
hemos dicho en la entradilla a la entrevista, sois un grupo atípico en España.
Nos vienen a la cabeza grandes de vuestro estilo como Mogwai. ¿Son vuestra
referencia? Mogwai es un grupo que nos gusta mucho a los tres, y sin duda han sido una influencia importante. Pero entre los tres tenemos gustos muy heterogéneos con cosas en común y otras que no. Si tuviéramos que elegir un grupo que nos fascina por igual sería Mice Parade.
As we
have said, you are an atypical band in Spain. We think about great bands such
as Mogwai. Are they your reference?
Mogwai is
a band that we all like very much, and obviously, has been a great influence.
But the three of us have heterogeneous likes with common and uncommon things.
If we have to choose a band that we all love, it would be Mice Parade.

¿Cómo es
un concierto de Boreals? ¿Usáis, por ejemplo, el apoyo de visuales para crear
atmósfera? El mismo que nos hace las portadas, Joan Bennassar, es el que se encarga de los visuales en directo; es un miembro más del grupo. Los directos son muy importantes para nosotros porque nos permite presentar nuestras canciones con más intensidad que la que se escucha en las grabaciones, y además porque nos lo pasamos muy bien.
How is a
Boreals concert? Do you use, for example, the support of visuals to create
atmospheres?
The
person who makes us the covers, Joan Bennassar, is the person who controls the
visuals live; he is another member of the band. Live shows are very important
for us because they allow us to present our songs with a plus of intensity than
the one you can listen on our recorded songs, and also because we have very
good times.
Para
próximos EP's ¿Tenéis pensado evolucionar hacia otros sonidos, explorar nuevas
tendencias...? ¿Cuáles? Ahora mismo estamos trabajando en nuestro primer LP, que está quedando más instrumental que nuestros trabajos anteriores. Ya lo hemos dicho pero lo estamos grabando en el estudio de nuestros amigos Lasers. El hecho de trabajar con ellos seguramente influya de alguna forma el resultado final, y creemos que para bien!

EP’s, are you thinking about exploring new sounds, new trends…? Which ones?
Nowadays
we are working on our first LP, and it’s being more instrumental than our
previous. We have said it before but, we are recording it at the studio of our
friends Lasers. The fact of being working with them must have influence someway
in the final result, and we think that for good!

Una de John Williams o de Howard Shore. If you
could be an O.S.T of a movie, which one would it be?
One from
John Williams or Howard Shore.

A veces el personaje se come a la persona. En
este caso, la entrevista histérica nos supone un histerismo añadido porque
somos auténticas fans histéricas del grupo que se somete a la
entrevista histérica hoy, desde que los descubriéramos hace unos meses. Después de planear su secuestro sin éxito
decidimos conformarnos con hacerles la entrevista que sigue, y con escuchar en
modo bucle sus temas, en espera de que compongan temas nuevos. Ahora en serio, Modelo de Respuesta Polar son:
Borja Mompó (cantante y guitarra), Fran Mollá (guitarra), Jorge Mollá (bajo) y
Matías Entraigues (batería). Publicaron un primer EP homónimo en 2011 y en 2012
editaron "Así pasen cinco años". Esta es su entrevista histérica.
El título del disco, ¿Tiene algo que ver con
la obra de Lorca "Así que pasen cinco años"?
MDRP: Sí. En aquel momento
estaba muy cercano a nosotros y nos pareció que encajaba perfectamente con lo
que esperábamos de esta nueva etapa.
Destacáis por el equilibrio perfecto que se
encuentra en vuestras canciones entre la letra y la música de modo que ni la
una ni la otra llevan el peso de la canción porque, si las letras son
generalmente duras, encuentran un muy buen apoyo musical con el que formar un
todo bastante contundente. Esto nos lleva a preguntaros, ¿Cuál es el proceso de
composición que seguís? ¿Primero letras y después melodía? ¿Surge todo a la
vez? Contadnos.
MDRP: Los acordes llegan antes
que la melodía y junto a ellos va surgiendo la métrica y finalmente la letras.
Todo está muy relacionado entre si y una cosa lleva a la otra. Hasta que no
encaja a la perfección, no paro.
No nos hemos podido documentar sobre esto (El
Sr. Google sabe todavía poco sobre vosotros) pero nos da la sensación de que
tenéis estudios musicales. ¿Es así?¿Cuáles?
MDRP: Todos hemos estudiado
desde hace muchos años. Principalmente con profesores particulares.
La crudeza de vuestras letras, desgarradoras a
veces, llenas de reproches otras veces... ¿Lo habéis pasado taaaan mal en
vuestra vida como para tener tanta carga sentimental que expresar? ¿De dónde
sacáis la rabia que volcáis después tan convincentemente en las letras?* *Si
queréis tenemos trankimazines para regalaros...
MDRP: Más que haberlo pasado mal, es nuestra forma de expresar lo que muchas veces a la hora de la verdad no nos atrevemos a decir. Es una buena terapia.
Sonáis muy en la línea de Nudozurdo, Havalina... ¿Os sentís identificados si os
ubicamos dentro de este tipo de bandas?
MDRP: No identificamos en el
sentido de que compartimos escenarios, festivales y bares. Creo que
musicalmente vamos por líneas distintas y la evolución que está llevando cada
uno es diferente.
En "Así pasen cinco años",
encontramos "Grazno", una joyita instrumental de 6 minutos. En el
Pop-Rock español lo instrumental nunca ha estado de moda. ¿Cuáles son vuestras
influencias?
MDRP: Esta pieza surgió a raíz
de una propuesta que recibimos para participar en un ciclo de rock
instrumental. No consideramos que nuestras influencias vengan del post-rock o
la música instrumental, de hecho venimos de algo mucho más diferente, pero no
sabemos por que en muchas canciones se nos van de la mano en este sentido.
Si tuvierais que explicarle a un
extraterrestre qué estilo de música hacéis. ¿Cómo la definiríais?
MDRP: Música de cuatro autores.
¿A quién lanzaríais un par de
bragas/calzoncillos de Hello Kitty y por qué?
MDRP: A nosotros mismos por que
es algo que nunca nos ha pasado y ya llevamos tiempo en esto.
¿Dónde os gustaría estar como grupo, cuando
pasen cinco años?
Rodeados de gente
profesional y con mucho trabajo por delante.

MDRP: El ensimismamiento de una persona frente a otra que está ahí, pase lo que pase.

Vuestro disco debut se titula “An Ending” (un final), ¿por qué habéis
escogido ese título?
¡Hola! Sí, ese es el nombre de la
canción que abre el álbum, pero... ¿Por qué lo escogimos? Difícil de explicar
realmente, pensé mucho en el fin del mundo mientras escribía algunas de las

gustaba la idea de que la canción introductoria fuera como una Banda Sonora de
eso; del caos, la emoción mientras las bombas caen y la lluvia se vuelve poco a
poco un lento invierno. ¡Pero también creo que estábamos bromeando un poco!
Esperamos que la gente no le de al botón de stop después de esa canción porque
se piense que así va a sonar todo el álbum.
Your debut album titled "An Ending", why have you chosen this title?
Hello! Yes, that's the name of the opening track on the album, but why did we choose it? Hard to say really, I was thinking a lot about the end of the world when I was writing some of the songs for the album (particulary "The Devil Wandered In and "Demons"), and I liked the idea that intro track was a kind of soundtrack to that; to the chaos and emotion as the bombs fall and the world plunges slowly into an eternal winter. But also think we were just being a bit cheeky! Hopefully people won't press stop after that track because they think that's the whole album.
Armellodie Records es un sello discográfico escocés independiente que
apuesta por bandas de la escena indie-folk-rock escocesa. ¿Nos podríais
explicar como ha sido el proceso la grabación del disco?
Bueno, lo grabamos todo por nuestra
cuenta unos meses antes, principalmente en mi habitación, y entonces lo
masterizamos profesionalmente en un estudio en Edinburgo. Lo enviamos a Al y
Scott de Armellodie con la idea de que
quizás les gustaria hacer la realización, y ¡Por alguna razón dijeron que sí!
Lo cual fué estupendo para nosotros, ya que desde siempre han sido una de
nuestras discográficas favoritas, con un montón de buenas bandas.
Armellodie Records is an
independent record label that focuses on Scottish indie, folk, rock bands. Could you explain how
has been the recording process for the album?
Well we recorded it all ourselves
over a few months, mainly in my bedroom, and then we had it professionally
mastered at a studio in Edinburgh. We sent it to Al and Scott at Armellodie on
the offchance that they might like to release it, and for some reason they said
yes! Which was very nice for us, since they've been one of our favourite labels
for a while, with loads of great bands.
Acordeones, violines, órganos, entre otros instrumentos… Nos ha llamado
la atención el contraste de la voz desgarradora de Mr. Tilling con las delicades
melodías de Miss. Miller. Vuestras canciones destacan por ser intensas y
emotivas. ¿Es eso lo que os hace diferentes a otras bandas indie-folk?
Jaja, sí, por qué no. Creo que todo
fan de la música folk que viene a vernos
tocar puede sentirse algo decepcionado cuando nos ve gritar y tirar las
guitarras al suelo habitualmente haciendo un ruido estridente horrible.
Accordions, violins, organs,
and other instruments ... We were struck by the contrast of the heartbreaking voice of Mr. Tilling
with Miss Miller delicate melodies. Your songs stand out as being intense and emotional.
Is that what makes you different from other indie-folk bands? Haha, yeah, why not. I think any
folk music fans who came to see us play might be a bit disappointed when they
saw us screaming and throwing our guitars on the floor and generally making a
horrible squealing racket.
Al escuchar “Winter Sun” nos ha recordado a la etapa de mediados de los
90 de REM. ¿Es un grupo que os ha influenciado de alguna manera? ¿Cuales son
vuestras influencias?
Ohhh eso es nuevo! Y halagador debo
decir. Me gusta realmente REM, pero no son una banda a la que escuche mucho.
Recuerdo a mis padres tocando muchos temas suyos cuando era niño así que
supongo que eso tuvo algún tipo de efecto duradero que desconocía hasta ahora!
El álbum ha sido comparado con otros de bandas como Okkervil River y Bright Eyes,
que me encantan. Hay muchas bandas y compositores a los que adoro, y me parece
difícil seleccionar al que realmente pueda ser una influencia para nuestras
canciones, y estoy seguro de que el resto de la banda piensa lo mismo.
Listening "Winter
Sun" has reminded us somehow REM in their 90s. Is a band that has influenced
you in any way? What are your influences?
Ooh that's a new one! And quite
flattering I would say. I do really like REM, but they aren't a band I listen
to much at all. I remember my parents playing them a lot when I was a kid so I
guess that's had some kind of lasting effect that I've been unaware of until
now! The album has been compared to bands like Okkervil River and Bright Eyes,
who I love. There are so many bands and songwriters who I adore, and I find it
hard to tell which ones creep in and influence our songs, and I'm sure it's the
same for the rest of the band.

No sé por donde empezar! Creo que se los tiraria a Nick Cave, porque soy un
gran, gran fan, y también creo que sería divertido ver su reacción.

Wow! I don't know where to start!
I think I would have to choose Nick Cave, because I'm a huge huge fan, and also
I think it would be funny to see how he might react.

¿Rugby o football?
Creo
que Barry es el único en el grupo que realmente se preocuparia por esta
pregunta, y diria definitivamente rugby, pero ese era el deporte de los niños
pijos de donde yo nací así que tendré
que decir fútbol (lo siento Barry).

I think Barry is the only one in
the band who would really care about this answer, and he would definitely say
rugby, but that's a game for posh boys where I'm from so I'm gonna have to say
football (sorry Barry).

Se trata de una canción sobre lo que
es estar confuso e inseguro de ti mismo, preguntándote el por qué de escribir y
componer canciones cuando hay grandes artistas anteriores a tí y que ya lo han
hecho mejor de lo que tu podrías nunca.
We finish the interview with
your single debut “Mona Lisa”. Can you explain what does the song mean for you?
This is a song about being
confused and unsure of yourself, and questioning the point of writing and
making music when there are great artists who have come before you who have
already done it better than you ever could.
